Premier League Borough recorded their first victory at Park Road for three years to move to the top of the table, but despite dominating much of the game, it took a last minute Steve Tricky penalty to separate the teams as a hard working Blandford side twice came back to equalise but in the end were unable to hold out following a final onslaught from the visitors. The Hornets were without James Pinder, Ross Williams and Alex Grimason but unveiled new signing from Verwood, Dan Goodall who came off the bench and showed his potential with a lively performance before earning the winning spot kick. Simon Landers carved out an early chance for Borough after only two minutes and he probably would have done better later in the game as he shot straight at the home keeper. Three minutes later a Blandford forward managed to break through the Borough defence, but his final shot was wide of the target. However the majority of pressure was on the home defence and it was no surprise that Borough took the lead on 18 minutes when Martin Sault turned in a corner from the left at the far post. 0-1. Further Borough pressure saw a firm drive from Sault charged down by the home defence, but against the run of play Blandford found themselves back in the game as a break down the right saw the ball pulled back from the by-line to Jamie Haylock who slotted home. 1-1. Borough continued to control the game but found many of their attacks frustrated by the offside flag however a chance on 28 minutes saw Landers do well to challenge the home keeper to a through ball as the gloveman came outside his area to clear the ball but although he Borough striker won the ball, a defender got back quickly to block the final shot. Three minutes from the break Borough were fortunate not to go behind as Haylock got a shot in from just inside the area, but Dan Burton did well to palm the ball away at full stretch. Half time 1-1. As Borough took the initiative from the restart, Rodrigo Pons came close with a curling free kick which went narrowly over the bar and the Hornets took the lead for the second time on 50 minutes when Landers sent in a perfectly weighted cross from the right and Darryll Williams headed home at the far post. 1-2. However within a minute the Royals were back level again when the Borough defence struggled to clear a free kick from the right and Mark Ford stabbed the ball home at the far post. 2-2. Goodall's introduction on 59 minutes gave Borough more pace down the flanks and stretched the home defence. With the game becoming virtually one way traffic, the Royals were forced to defend in numbers and were happy to concede a succession of corners which Borough failed to capitalise from. On 63 minutes Rodrigo Pons fired in a low drive through a sea of bodies which the home keeper did well to divert past the post and three minutes later Mariausz Iglewski twisted in the area to get a shot in, but the final drive was collected by the keeper. Pons came close again with a header from a corner which went just over the bar and another Borough flag kick from the left picked out Salte at the far post but his header went narrowly wide. With time running out Goodall opened up the Blandford defence on 83 minutes with a break down the right before pulling the ball back to Iglewski, but his first time shot was blocked by the keepers legs and Pons latched onto the rebound only to see his low drive come back off the post. It looked like Borough would have to settle for a draw as four minutes from time Ross Mills header from another Borough corner was cleared off the line, but on the stroke of full time Goodall went down under a challenge inside the area as he looked to latch onto a through ball down the middle and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot, leaving Steve Tricky to step up and win the game for the Hornets. 2-3.
POOLE Borough boss Paul Harding felt his side warranted their controversial late penalty as they triumphed 3-2 at Blandford United on Saturday. The Hornets went ahead after 20 minutes through Martin Sault but Jamie Haylock hauled the Royals level five minutes later. Darryll Williams put the visitors back in the drivers seat after the break, only for Mark Ford to get his sides second equaliser. But the Hornets were given a penalty in stoppage time after Russell Trowbridge was adjudged to have clattered Dan Goodall as they chased a ball over the top. The Royals were furious over the decision as Steve Tricky stepped up to take full advantage and win Borough the match. Blandford boss Jamie Murray blasted the penalty award as an absolutely disgraceful decision. But Harding said: They didnt take it too well but from my point of view it was a clear penalty. When I was coming off their fans were saying it was a clear penalty and that we should have had a couple before that. I dont know how they can argue because it was just one-way traffic. The ball got put over the top, Dan Goodall turned and went one-on-one with the keeper and Russell just clattered him. As our player went to pull the trigger he was taken out. While Harding and the referee claim Trowbridge intended to fell Goodall, Murray saw things differently in the Royals dugout. He said: Their guy and our guy both turned as the ball went over their heads and just ran into each other. Russell didnt even know the other guy was there he was just following the flight of the ball. We put so much effort into the game and and to lose it in the way we did was so upsetting. This result takes Poole Borough top of the Dorset Premier League table due to a number of other games being called off. Despite their dominance against Blandford, Hornets manager was worried his side would leave Park Road empty handed once again. Harding added: Generally the players didnt play up to half their potential but they ground out a result. We went there last year, absolutely played them off the park but lost 3-2. After hitting the post twice and having another cleared off the line, it just seemed like it was going to happen here again. We were in their half for 75 minutes and just didnt finish them off. Every time we did score, we gave a sloppy goal away at the other end. |
