Premier League
Despite being short of a number of the first team squad, Borough produced an excellent team performance at St Marys Field to move back into second place in the table, and they could well have chalked up more than their five goal haul had the home keeper not have produced some heroic interceptions in the second half, when the Hornets looked to run riot. With Ross Mills busy getting married and Steve Tricky supporting his defensive colleague, Lukasz Kozlowski made his first start for Borough, while Paul Harding drafted himself into midfield. Both sides looked cautious in the early exchanges, but Borough came close on 10 minutes when Danny Gibbons saw his header from a left wing corner cleared off the line. However two minutes later the Bridport no 8 was presented with a chance on the edge of the area, but he dragged his shot wide. The home side had the ball in the back of the net on 15 minutes, but the goal was disallowed for offside, while they also came close on 22 minutes when a quick counter attack saw their striker clear through on the right, but his final shot was easily collected by Andy Knights. However it was Borough who took the lead on 24 minutes when Kozlowski powered past a defender wide on the left and sent in a low cross to Rodrigo Pons 10 yards out whose close range effort was blocked by home keeper Mike Connelly but Mariusz Iglewski was on hand to bury the rebound. 0-1. Within a minute Iglewski went clear through on goal, but shot over, but Borough doubled their lead on 27 minutes when Pons latched onto a high forward ball in the area and deftly lobbed the advancing Connelly. 0-2. The pressure now all came from Borough with Kozlowski causing panic in the home back line every time he got the ball. On 29 minutes Kozlowski broke clear down the left before cutting inside but he elected to cross rather than shoot and the ball was cleared. Four minutes later a shot from Kozlowski was chested off the line while a minute later the Pole again got clear of the home defence down the middle and he lifted his shot over Connelly but the ball went just wide. Kozlowski was denied again on 41 minutes when a 30 yard effort produced a fine save from Connelly, but a minute before the break, Borough finally increased the lead as Kozlowski again found space down the left and centred to Pons, who skilfully brought the ball down before slotting past the keeper. 0-3. Half Time 0-3. There was no let up from the Hornets after the break and they increased their lead only two minutes after the restart when Connelly failed to hold a cross from the left under a challenge from Gibbons and the striker tucked home the loose ball for his first Borough goal. 0-4. On 54 minutes Kozlowski had the ball in the back of the net following good work from Joe Toghill down the left, but the goal was disallowed for offside. To their credit Bridport still posed a danger on the break and on 59 minutes Knights came 30 yards out of his goal to deny a forward who looked to have broken clear of the Borough defence. However the majority of pressure was still on the Bridport goal and on 60 minutes Gibbons was unfortunate to see a close range shot from a corner deflected wide, but from the resulting flag kick the ball was centred to Iglewski whose looping header dropped over the back pedalling Connelly and into the net. 0-5. Borough brought on all three substitutes with 25 minutes to go, and although Bridport took advantage of the reshuffle to produce their best spell of the match, they did little to trouble Knights. The best chances, however still came at the other end and on 69 minutes Toghill got on the end of an Iglewski cross from the right but his header was palmed away by Connelly while a minute later Gallagher just failed to connect to a low centre from Iglewski, in front of goal. And Connelly almost single handedly kept the scoreline down in the final 15 minutes as first he denied Iglewski at point blank range after Gallagher had carved out the chance with a twisting run into the area, and later when Adam Watson squared to Gallagher in front of goal the Bridport gloveman spread himself wide to block the resulting effort. |
