Premier League
With Cup fixtures meaning this being the only League game to be played today, Borough took advantage to increase their lead at the top of the table to 4 points, but Bridport showed the form which had seen them pick up three straight wins prior to this game and if their finishing had been better during a purple patch mid way through the first half, the final outcome may well have been different. With Rodrigo Pons and Martin Sault absent, Paul Harding gave a first team debut to striker Joe Toghill with another new signing Ryan Moore on the bench. Borough looked the more lively from kick off, creating a number of half chances before they opened the scoring on 11 minutes when a James Pinder cross from the left picked out Simon Landers inside the area and with his shot cannoning down off the cross bar, Kenny Strong was on hand to steer home the loose ball. 1-0. However in their first clear attack on 22 minutes, Bridport came close to equalising when a rare slip from Wayne Crutcher saw him unable to cut out a long ball forward, allowing Ben Clarke through on goal, but his final shot was wide of the right hand post. This opportunity gave the visitors a boost, and further Bridport pressure saw Jamie McClemence run through into space down the right before his final shot across goal went narrowly past the far post, which was followed a minute later by an effort from Ben Ward which was just off target and a later break away from Clarke which again failed to test Dan Burton. Towards the end of the half Borough began to make in roads again and just before the break Landers was inches away from getting his foot to a left wing cross to divert the ball home. Half Time 1-0. The half time team talk must have worked for the Hornets as they took control after the break and gave the Bees little opportunity to get back into the game. As if to underline their step up in approach, Borough increased the lead only 7 minutes after the restart as a good interchange between Strong and Steve Tricky wide on the right resulted in Pinder being sent clear down the wing and he whipped in a low cross which Toghill hammered home at the near post. 2-0. Two minutes later another Borough chance was carved out by Landers, who did well to control a cross field pass before teeing up Darryll Williams, whose low drive from 20 yards out was collected by Lee Cuff in the home goal. And sustained pressure from the Hornets paid off on 69 minutes when the linesman picked up that a cross into the Bridport area was handled by a visiting defender, and Tricky stepped up to convert his second spot kick in successive games. 3-0. With the game all but over, Borough were content to play the ball around and protect their clean sheet, but there were still opportunities to further increase the lead and on 78 minutes Cuff did well to punch away a Pinder right wing cross under pressure, while three minutes from time Toghill set up Pinder in the area but his final shot was blocked by Cuff's legs and almost immediately the ball was fed out to Luke Crutcher on the right but his low drive went just wide of the far post. |
