Pinder shines as Boro clobber Cobham
POOLE Borough boss Paul Harding hailed the "Ronaldo-esque" efforts of midfielder James Pinder after he scored a hat-trick in his side's 7-2 rout at Cobham Sports on Saturday. The Hornets rocketed out of the traps and were 3-0 up within half an hour through goals from Rodrigo Pons after eight minutes, Pinder on 16 and Alex Grimason on 30. But the home side were allowed back into the contest, as strikes from Luke Daw and Sean Gallagher either side of the break made things interesting. This simply spurred Borough into overdrive, though, as Pons notched a second, Paul Honeybun converted a penalty and Pinder struck twice in injury time for a tremendous treble. The result leaves the Hornets second in the Dorset Premier League standings and a delighted Harding applauded his team's attacking efforts - with Pinder earning special praise. He said: "Pinder is on fire at the moment and I don't think I've seen anyone as clinical as him in front of goal. James plays from wide right - a bit Ronaldoesque - and I just need my forwards to start scoring now. "There are a lot of individuals in the side and it's just a matter of getting them to work as a team now." |
Dorset
Premier League Borough chalked up their best result for two years and extended their unbeaten run to five games since the start of the season with James Pinder picking up his second hat-trick in three matches. However after the Hornets scored three goals inside the first thirty minutes, Cobham pegged Borough back to just a single goal lead early in the second half before the visitors showed their class with four further goals as a reward for maintaining the pressure until the final whistle to send the large Dorset Groundhop crowd away with memories of a emphatic victory The Hornets were quick out of the blocks and Pinder could have opened the scoring after only two minutes after being sent through one-on-one against Cobham keeper Simon Higgins but the gloveman managed to deflect the shot past the post. However further Borough pressure saw them open the scoring on 8 minutes when Rodrigo Pons fired in a free kick from 20 yards out which took a deflection to beat Higgins. Borough continued to dominate and on 14 minutes Pinder battled well to nip the ball off of a defender on the right before cutting inside and driving in a shot which was blocked by Higgins, while within a minute Martin Sault fired in a dipping 35 yard drive which went narrowly over. There was no rest bite for the Cobham defence as on 16 minutes Sault drove forward on a strong run down the middle before sending Pinder through on goal and this time he slid the ball past Higgins to double the Hornet's lead. On 21 minutes a great Borough passing move on midfield opened up the Cobham defence to allow Pinder through but Higgins was out quickly to block and two minutes later the home keeper was in action again to deny Simon Landers. But Borough deservedly increased their lead on 28 minutes when some good skill from Landers saw him receive the ball on the penalty spot before quickly teeing up Alex Grimason running in from the right to drive the ball home. Despite the Hornets control of the game, Cobham gave themselves a lifeline on 33 minutes when a loose ball bouncing around the Borough area was dispatched by Luke Daw past Dan Burton. Borough had two further chances to increase their lead before the break as first Honeybun floated in a free kick which Pons headed narrowly wide by the left hand post and a quick ball forward from John Bates send Pinder clear down the right, who slipped the ball inside to the unmarked Paul Honeybun who shot wide with the goal at his mercy. Half Time 1-3. Borough's failure to convert their first half chances came back to haunt them four minutes after the restart when Cobham broke away down the right and Sean Gallagher cut inside before converting past Burton from a tight angle. However the nervous period for the Borough fans lasted only a short time as on 56 minutes Honeybun whipped in a free kick from the left and Pons stole between two defenders to steer the ball home from 6 yards out. And on 64 minutes Borough restored the three goal cushion after substitute Ross Mills was tripped just inside the area and Honeybun stepped home to convert the spot kick. Continued Borough pressure saw Pinder come close on 76 minutes when he cut in from the right and unleashed a shot from the edge of the area which was turned past the post by Higgins. The Hornets didn't slacken the pace when they want down to 10 men after Ken Strong had the leave the field with an injury, the visitors having already used all their substitutes, as Honeybun came within an inch of scoring with a close range volley which came back off the inside of the post after Mills had crossed from the left. Borough however were rewarded for maintaining their tempo during the final period of the game, as in injury time Pinder outfought a defender to latch onto a through ball and his shot took a deflection off of the advancing Higgins, but still had the pace to cross the line. And Pinder netted again in the dying minutes when he ran onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Honeybun and deftly lobbed Higgins to complete a quality hat-trick. |
