Poole Borough (5) 7,

Cobham Sports (0) 0.

Dorset Premier League
Saturday 1st November 2008

Borough followed up their 7-2 victory earlier in the season at Merley Park with another 7 goal salvo against their near neighbours, but this time they were able to celebrate a clean sheet, keeper Dan Burtons second in consecutive games, to lift the Hornets into third place in the table as they chalked up their first 'double' of the season.

The game was played in driving rain, but despite the wet conditions underfoot, Borough maintained their intricate passing game that resulted in opening up the Cobham defence on a signifiant number of occasions and was the catalyst for many of the goals converted particularly in the first 45 minutes.

Borough had the wind in their backs in the first half and with the visitors struggling to make any headway the Hornets stormed into a five goal lead at the break with James Pinder opening the scoring, followed by goals by Martin Sault, Rodrigo Pons a brace from Simon Landers.

In the second half Cobham keeper Simon Higgins kept the home side from an even bigger final scoreline with a series of fine saves, but as it was Landers completed his hat trick and James Pinder chalked up his second goal as the Hornets continued to dominate. Before the end Cobham did get the ball in the net, but the goal was disallowed and at the other end Pinder missed a penalty to deny his hat trick.

Despite the difficult conditions expereinced in this local derby, the game was played in a very sporting manner born out by the referee not having to caution any members of either side.

Rodrigo shines as Hornets triumph

POOLE Borough manager Paul Harding hailed South American sensation Rodrigo Pons as the “catalyst” to their 7-0 demolition of Cobham Sports last Saturday. The Hornets ran roughshod over the Dorset Premier League’s bottom side with Simon Lander hitting a hat-trick and James Pinder bagging a brace. Pinder should have made it three after missing a penalty but with Pons and Martin Sault also on target, the result was always secure.

Borough had failed to win in their past two league matches but Harding claims the return of Pons and Pinder to the team made all the difference. He said: “Rodrigo was the catalyst for us – he has missed two or three games recently. “We had a poor spell while he was out but some of the stuff he did against Cobham was sublime. “He played some really beautiful football on a bad pitch and everything stemmed from him really. “He got a goal and could have just tapped it in but he decided to go around a couple more defenders first.

“James Pinder has also been missing in the past few games and since his goals have dried up, we’ve played quite poorly to be honest. “But he was back to form and Simon Lander got a hat-trick – his finishing was quality.”
