Despite controlling much of the game, a brace of breakaway goals saw Borough two down inside 25 minutes of the first half but the Hornets battled back to dominate the second half but were unable to convert all their numerous chances and in the end had to settle for a draw. Borough were without new first team captain Wayne Crutcher due to injury, but had James Pinder, Simon Landers Darryll Williams and Steve Tricky all making their league debuts for the Hornets.

The Cranes found themselves ahead after only four minutes when they launched the ball forward quickly after a Borough attack broke down, sending Antell clear through and he took the the ball past Dan Burton before slotting into an empty net.

Borough came close to equalising on eight minutes when a defensive clearance from a home corner fell to Martin Sault on the edge of the area, but his low drive was cleared off the line.

On 14 minutes Antell again broke through but Burton did well to divert the shot wide at full stretch, while two minutes later Burton was again in action, making a good block low down by his right hand post.

The majority of the play remained in the Cranborne half and on 20 minutes a James Pinder low drive was pushed onto the post by Loader in the visitors goal and from the resulting corner Sault saw a header just clear the bar. However against the run of play Cranborne increased their lead on 23 minutes on the breakaway as the ball was fed down the right to Beattie who finished well into the bottom left hand corner.

Continued Borough pressure finally paid dividends on 47 minutes when a strong forward run from Honeybun took him to the edge of the area before squaring to Pinder whose shot was parried by Loader, but Simon Landers was on hand to tuck home the loose ball

Half time 1-2

The second half saw Borough camped in the Cranes half with Burton having little to trouble him throughout the remaining 45 minutes.

Five minutes after the restart, good work down the left by Pinder saw him cross to Rodrigo Pons at the near post, but he pulled the ball across the goalmouth rather than electing to shoot and a defender got in to clear. Within a minute a corner from the right by Paul Honeybun fell to Sault at the near post but his low shot flashed just the wrong side of the upright.

On 62 minutes Darryl Williams was sent clear through and although Loader came out well to block the resulting shot, in the subsequent melee Borough were awarded a penalty after the ball struck a Cranborne hand, but Honeybun stepped up and blasted the spot kick over the bar.

Borough continued to push forward and on 67 minutes Bates shot narrowly over from a Honeybun right wing corner while two minutes later Williams again got behind the Cranborne defence, but his final shot was off target.

Ross Mills came on with 15 minutes to go and almost made an immediate impact with a header from a corner which dropped narrowly wide. But with eight minutes remaining Borough finally drew level as Honeybun send Pinder through on goal and he made no mistake to slot a low drive past Loader

Borough still had time to seal victory and their best chance came in the final minute when Mills got behind the Cranes back line, but his final shot was off target.
