Pre-Season
Friendly A well deserved victory was achieved under lights at Swanage with the reserves playing some good attacking football, once again a little more composure in front of goal could of seen the score line increased, however it was not to be and after a cagy opening few minutes the Reserves were to receive a shock when on 3 minutes a long hopeful ball into the Borough box was not dealt with and the resulting header looped over SHEAR 0-1 Back came Borough straight away but PORTER saw his shot blocked on the line. In the 13th minute, WOLDON beat the off side trap only to see his shot saved at point blank and away for a corner, from this corner the Reserves scored a deserved equaliser when the deep corner was played back in to the box, it found WATSON who smashed the ball home 1-1. The Reserves were now fully on the front foot and in the 20th minute MULVEY received the ball in his own half, he stepped on the gas and went directly towards the Swanage goal and as the defenders backed off in panic, he unleashed a drive that found the roof of the net a great strike 1-2. More
chances came and went notably from WOLDON, PORTER &
MULVEY, however, in the 28th minute RUDD won the ball in
midfield, a quick pass to WOLDON who slipped it through
to PORTER to calmly poke home 1-3. Minutes later and the
lead should have increased when RUDD found himself 1 on 1
with the keeper; once again the keeper produced a top
save. Swanage then launched a couple of attacks that saw
shots go wide without really troubling the Borough goal,
Borough continued to press as the half drew to a close. KING should have scored in the 81st minute, but again the keeper pulled of a great save. No further goals were added in the half; WATSON was substituted at the referees request for appearing to react to a late challenge, it looked harsh on Adam; however the referee was to then take centre stage by requesting a Swanage substitution; however this turned into a red card when the player verbally abused him. Both Giles
& Sean were very pleased with the nights work,
good energy levels were displayed and as the game wore on
good team disciplines were still very evident, this bodes
well for the forthcoming league campaign. Another
pleasing aspect were the amount of chances created,
although the finishing needed a bit more luck, the fact
that the players were in good positions to get shots away
also bodes well, the whole side has been told that now
pre-season is over the hard work starts on Saturday and
both Giles & Sean are confident of a successful
season.
Pre-Season
Friendly With only a week to go before the Reserves start their league campaign, they travelled to Broadstone to face, ex borough player Tom Allens side Westover Spartans in a friendly, the result was a comfortable win although that belies a tale of 2 halfs, the 1st saw Poole Borough look lethargic and off the pace against a side who battled hard and caused a few scares going forward, the 2nd half saw a much improved performance by the Reserves who dominated proceedings and created numerous chances, again to fall short on the shooting front. In a dour 1st half, it was on 39 minutes that PORTER collected the ball, beat 2 players before shooting over the keeper an into the net, a great individual goal and well deserved for his efforts. 0-1 HALF TIME WESTOVER SPARTANS - POOLE BOROUGH RES 0 1 After a few words at half time, Borough took control of the half from the first whistle with Watson, Mulvey & Townsend dominating the midfield ably assisted by Hayward. As previously stated numerous chances came and went with the Poole Borough players still trying to find their shooting boots !!!. as the game drew on it became more evident that the next goal would come from a set piece and in the 63rd minute following a series of corners, Mulvey took another and with pace found the head of HAYWARD to firmly head home to increase the lead 0-2. Further chances came and went as the final whistle drew near, special mention goes to SHEAR for turning out in goal and to FORSTER in defence, whose performance was excellent. Although pleased with the win and the clean sheet, Giles has concerns that the side is not finishing enough of the good chances being created and he has challenged his forwards to be more ruthless in front of goal. Once again there were good performances across the pitch, noticeably in the second half. POOLE BOROUGH: SHEAR, BALL (FARNON 45), MOLYNEUX, GRIFFIN, FORSTER, DE BENEDICTUS (HAYWARD 45), WATSON, MADGEWICK ( TOWNSEND), MULVEY, WOLDON (KING 45), PORTER (CAMPBELL 45).
Pre-Season
Friendly Poole Borough Reserves failed to get any reward for their endeavours against a well organised Sunday Premier Darbys Corner team. Early DC pressure saw PB retreating and it appeared that a few PB players were all to easily out muscled off the ball, in the first 5 minutes alone, DC hit the bar on 2 occasions and it was no surprise on 7 minutes when they took the lead, once again the PB defence were static and failed to react when KNIGHT initial save was smashed home by a DC forward 0-1 slowly PB began to warm to the task and started to play some good possession football RUDD went close on a couple of occasions with first time shots, however on 15 minutes PB were caught out when they surrendered possession too cheaply and the DC forward turned smartly and shot home 0-2 Minutes later the score line should have been cut when following a PB corner HEBDON rose but his header was well saved. In the 25th minute a good run and shot by DE BENEDICTUS, saw his effort canon back of the bar and away to safety. The remainder of the half then followed a set pattern, PB played good, neat football without really producing a finishing product, further efforts from WOLDON, PORTER & RUDD never troubled the DC keeper. DC played a more direct style and also created a further few chances only to be thwarted by the PB defence. HALF TIME POOLE BOROUGH RES 0 2 DARBYS CORNER Changes were made at half time as PB picked up the tempo and took the game more and more to their opposition, the first 15 minutes saw PB again squander good chances while DC offered little themselves, once again though following a DC corner on 60 minutes the score was increased when the corner was not dealt with effectively and a DC midfielder saw his looping head go in 0-3 Once again PB shrugged off the disappointment of conceding a third and continued pressing forward while DC seemed content to sit back and launch counter attacks, again chances fell to WOLDON, KING, MADGEWICK, all were thwarted. With time running out, DC launched another counter attack and their forward showed how it should be done with a calm finish 0-4 Although disappointed with the manner in which some of the goals were conceded GILES & SEAN took a lot of positives from the game, notably the passing and movement, even though the final decision making was all too often the wrong decision, however they are confident this will improve before the season starts, the effort was for all to see and if the side can become more confident in their own and their team-mates abilities then the side will perform well this season. POOLE BOROUGH: KNIGHTS, BALL (MURPHY 45) MOLYNEUX, HEBDON, FARNON (FORSTER 45) MADGEWICK, DE BENEDICTUS (MULVEY 45) RUDD, HOLBERT (WATSON 45) WOLDON, PORTER (KING 45)
Pre-Season
Friendly A thorough performance by the reserves saw them run out convincing winners against a game AC side, played at Morden on a sunny afternoon, Giles used 17 players as he continues to finalise his plans for the forthcoming season, once again the whole side performed well and at times played some great passing football, possession with progression was the overriding goal of the game and this was achieved. The game started frenetically with both sides trying to cope with the uneven pitch, however it only took until the 8th minute for the deadlock to be broken when SALDARRIAGA beat the keeper at the near post with an exquisite free kick 1-0 further good work followed from RUDD, WATSON & MULVEY as PB continued to press, with 20 minutes on the clock an AC midfielder was allowed to run through and get his shot away, this hit the post and a static PB defence did not react allowing an AC forward to tap home for the equaliser 1-1 This goal finally shook PB into more positive action and in the 25th minute following good work between De Ben & Watson saw the latters deep cross volleyed home by MULVEY 2-1 Minutes
later it was 3 as the AC defence were caught in
possession by Saldarriaga who unselfishly set up CAMPBELL
to round the keeper and slot home 3-1. Knights in the PB
goal was alert to clear the danger in the 41st minute
when an AC forward found himself in the clear, in the
45th minute following a good PB passage of play
CAMPBELLS cross shot found the bottom corner 4-1 Giles was delighted with the workout and paid tribute to his side for their efforts, he and they are all to aware there will be a lot harder outings coming up but, this was a full game, and you can only beat what is put in front of you. PB
1ST HALF KNIGHTS, DE BENEDICTUS, MOLYNEAUX. FORSTER,
FARNON, MULVEY, WATSON, JARAMILLO, RUDD, CAMPBELL,
SALDARIAGGO.
Pre-Season
Friendly Borough collected their second Wessex Premier League scalp in two weeks as an assured performance saw them overcome a full strength New Milton side in an entertaining encounter at Fawcetts Field. New Milton had the best of the initial exchanges and went one up to an early goal, but as the half progressed Borough began to get into their stride and took advantage of the superb surface to play some excellent passing football. It was no surprise therefore that the Hornets drew level on 23 minutes when Rodrigo Pons latched on to a high ball into the area and deftly lobbed the advancing keeper. Borough looked solid at the back with the central pairing of Kenny Strong and Wayne Crutcher working well together leaving the home side struggling to get a shot on target while at the other end Borough came close to increasing their lead on 33 minutes when a neat interchange in the area saw Pons send Kieran Campbell into space, but the final shot from a tight angle was blocked by the New Milton keeper. Just before the break, Campbell had another chance when he did well to get his head to a left wing corner, but the ball went just over. Half Time 1-1 As with the first half New Milton started stronger after the break and on 54 minutes a superb 40 yard diagonal ball forward picked out a home winger in space, but Dan Burton was out quickly to block the shot, while four minutes later Strong executed a well timed tackle to deny another break away. However it was Borough who took the lead on 61 minutes from the penalty spot after Daryll Williams was bundled over in the area by the home keeper, with Luke Crutcher stepping up to convert the spot kick. Further Borough pressure saw Martin Sault go close with two long range efforts, but as the half progressed the home side began to take the initiative and Borough had to defend well to maintain the advantage. Borough made wholesale changes with 15 minutes remaining to see out the game with a young side and could have increased the lead on 85 minutes when Simon Landers received a left wing cross in the area with his back to goal and laid the ball back to Kieran Mulvey who saw his first time effort flash just wide of the post. Another very positive Borough performance especially considering there were a number of players absent, Ross Mills (working), Anthony Winders (injured), Paul Honeybun (ill) and Dan Young (holiday), with Wayne Crutcher leading the team well on his first outing as captain. Borough: Dan Burton, Alex Grimason, Kenny Strong, Wayne Crutcher, Matt Morris, John Bates, Luke Crutcher, Martin Sault, Daryll Williams, Kieran Campbell, Rodrigo Pons. Subs: (used from 65 minutes) Simon Landers, Adam Watson, Kieran Mulvey, Diego Jarramillo, Danielle Saldarigga, Paul Giles.
Pre-Season
Friendly Report from Paul Harding: Borough played pretty well, but it was one of those games where had we been out all night we wouldn't have scored, as the Hornets hit the bar four times, had three penalty shouts turned down and two shots cleared off the line. Borough (finished with): Guiermo, Keith Whatling, Paul Giles, Wayne Crutcher, Matt Morris, Adam Watson, Diego Jarramillo, Luke Crutcher, Kieran Mulvey, Paul Harding, Kieran Cambell.
Pre-Season
Friendly On the hottest day of the year so far, Borough produced a scorching display to out perform their Wessex Premier opponents, racing into a 3-0 lead before the New Forest side pulled back two goals in the last five minutes to leave a result which did not reflect the level of control Borough enjoyed throughout the game. Borough created the first chance on 9 minutes when a Hornets attack was cleared only as far as Paul Honeybun, but his first time effort cleared the bar. Two minutes later Rodrigo Pons sent a teasing cross into the Lymington area which Campbell got on the end of but put the chance over. Lymingtons first chance came on 13 minutes with a low shot which looked to be heading goalwards before taking a deflection off a Borough defender. However Borough maintained the initiative and took the lead on 18 minutes when Pons was sent into the area after good work down the left and although we was pushed wide by the keeper, he unselfishly pulled the ball back to Honeybun who blasted home from just inside the area. The Hornets came close to doubling their lead on 27 minutes when Pons sent Daniele Saldarriaga on a brake down the left and his low shot flashed narrowly wide of the far post. But another flash of brilliance from Pons on 34 minutes lead to Boroughs second goal as he caught the visiting defence flat footed, lifting the ball over the back line, allowing Kieran Campbell a clear run through before coolly lobbing the advancing keeper. Pons came close to creating a third for Borough before the break with a left wing cross which Martin Sault headed wide. HT 2-0 Borough continued to maintain the pressure after the break and increased the lead further on 57 minutes when Cambell found space down the right and seeing the visiting keeper off his line, lobbed the gloveman from 25 yards out. With a flurry of substitutions and the heat taking its toll both sides struggled to carve of further chances until 78th minute when Dan Burton was equal to a close range shot, and five minutes later the Borough keeper stood his ground well when a Lymington player broke clear of the defence, forcing the striker wide resulting in the final shot going wide. On 85 minutes Borough could have made it four after Danny Young battled well to get to the left by-line before cutting the ball back to Callum Mcleod whose close range shot went narrowly wide. However within a minute Lymington pulled a goal back when a visiting forward latched on to an weak back pass to slot the ball past Burton. And almost immediately the visitors chalked up a second goal following a quick breakaway. Borough: Dan Burton, Alex Grimason, John Bates, Wayne Crutcher, Matt Morris, Dan Young, Paul Honeybun, Martin Sault, Kieran Campbell, Daniel Saldarriaga, Rodrigo Pons. Subs: (all used from 60 minutes) Simon Landers, Adam Watson, Kieran Mulvey, Callum Mcleod, Diego Armando, Luke Crutcher.
Pre-Season
Friendly In their first pre-season friendly, Borough experimented with a different line up in each half against their Wessex League opponents and provided a solid performance to secure the draw. The first half started quietly, but the visitors had the first chance on 18 minutes with a shot which came off the bar. However within a minute Rodrigo Pons saw a cross from the left headed over the bar by a visiting defender. Borough's Columbian keeper Guiermo was kept busy and made a fine save at a Christchurch forward's feet to deny a break through on 24 minutes, and five minutes later he tipped a long range shot onto the bar, before it was cleared to safety. However at the other end Borough's South American trio of Pons, Diego Armando and Jose Saldarriga were beginning to open up the visiting defence with their crisp one touch football which resulted in the Hornets taking the lead five minutes before the break when Saldarriga saw a low shot turned into his own net by a Christchurch defender. HT 1-0 After re-shuffling their side for the second half, Borough were unfortunate to see Christchurch draw level from the penalty spot five minutes after the restart when Ken Strong was harshly adjudged to have fouled a visiting striker in the area with what looked from the touchline to have been a superbly timed tackle. Borough came close to restoring the lead on 55 minutes when Paul Honeybun's low drive beat the keeper but cannoned off a defender while on 69 minutes Anthony Winders broke clear but was forced wide by the keeper and he just failed to cut the ball back to Callum Mcleod in the 6 yard box. It was Christchurch though who found the net on 74 minutes when a visiting striker managed to poke the ball home after a goal mouth scramble. Winders continued to cause problems for the visitors defence, and linked well down the right with Mcleod on 80 minutes before the ball was squared to Martin Sault whose low drive went under the keeper's dive, but the gloveman had taken enough sting from the shot to allow a defender to get back and clear off the line. However within two minutes Winders put the Hornets level with a thumping header from a corner which a defender got his body to, but couldn't keep out. There was still time for the returning Dan Burton to get into the action when he stood his ground well to block the final shot after a Christchurch forward had broken through the Borough back line.
