Dorset Premier League
Saturday 4th October 2008

Despite dominating the majority of play, Borough had to settle for a share of the points in the local derby at the County Ground as a failure to convert their fluid passing play into goalscoring opportunities in the final third of the pitch lead to a frusting afternoon for the Hornets.

Borough controlled the game from the kick-off and created their first clear chance after nine minutes, when Daryl Williams did well to carve out some space wide on the right before centering to Ross Mills, whose close range shot was blocked by a defender and from the resulting corner Wayne Crutcher's header went narrowly over.

On 14 minutes the Hammers came close as a cross from the right was caught in the wind and Dan Burton had to stretch to palm the ball away. But two minutes later the home side had a let off when a curling 25 yard free kick from Paul Honeybun slid under the keepers body but came off the post and the gloveman was relieved to find the ball still in play and got down quickly to smother the rebound.

The Hornets had a penalty shout on 21 minutes when Lee Diaper had his trailing leg taken away from him after a strong run into the area, but the referee waved away the visitor's appeals. Instead Borough were awarded a corner which picked out John Bates whose dipping shot came off the bar and although Williams got to the rebound, he couldn't force the ball home.

Further Borough pressure saw Ross Edwards, making his first start of the season, go close with a neat flick from the edge of the box, while after a twisting run into the area, Diaper's saw his low shot hit the side netting.

The Hammers were restricted to a couple of chances which were well wide of the target, but on the stroke of half time Gary Williams was presented with a opportunity 20 yards out and his shot took a deflection off a defenders leg to loop over Burton and into the net.

Half Time 1-0.

Borough stepped up the pace after the restart, but still struggled to find away through the home defence, until the 61st minute when Williams sent in a cross from the left which was cleared only as far as Edwards, who dispatch a superbly struck shot on the turn into the top right hand corner.

The Hammers attacking play was restricted to long hopeful balls forward, but they packed the midfield well to deny the Hornets further chances until the 78th minute when a rare 'route 1' approach from Borough saw a clearence from Burton pick out Williams wide on the left, whocrossed to Mills but the final shot was blocked.

Two minutes later Williams was sent through on the left, but his first time shot was off target, while on 82 minutes substitute Rodrigo Pons sent in a free kick from 25 yards out which the home keeper did well to collect.

As the final minutes ticked away, Borough's play became more anxious and with Anthony Winders coming on they forced more pressure on the home back line, but the nearest the Hornets came to a winner was three minutes from time when a left wing corner fell to Mills six yards out but his low drive was diverted over the bar by a defender on the line.
