Premier League With both teams going into the game unbeaten, it was Poole Borough who secured the bragging rights in the local derby against Hamworthy Recreation, coming from behind to secure a 2-1 victory in an entertaining encounter between two evenly matched sides at Turlin Moor. With Ross Mills and Steve Tricky unavailable, Anthony Winders made his first start for the Hornets, while Lee Diaper returned to Borough midfield after re-signing for the club. Borough started the brighter and on eight minutes Wayne Crutcher came close with a header from a free kick which went narrowly over and two minutes later Diaper found space in the area but his shot went just wide. Recreation carved out their first chance on the immediate counter attack when Simon Brett broke clear of the Borough defence but Dan Burton got out quickly to block the resulting shot. However another quick break on 21 minutes saw Hamworthy take the lead on 21 minutes as the ball was centered from the right to Wayne Hole who picked his spot with a clinical finish to send a low drive past Burton. The Honets continued to enjoy the majority of possession and on 29 minutes a good move down the left saw Winders square to Rodrigo Pons on the edge of the area but his first time shot went over, while a minute later a Borough free kick into the area was cleared only as far as Pons, whose shot was blocked by a defender. Just before the break a Hamworthy defender was forced to clear a cross over the bar under pressure from Winders and John Bates got his head to the resulting corner, but it went wide. Half Time 0-1. Within a minute of the restart Borough were back on level terms when Winders latched onto a right wing cross from Lee Diaper just inside the area and although he mis-queued his strike, it still had enough pace to beat Kevin Leonard in the visitors goal. A minute later Borough nearly doubled their lead when Diaper saw a shot charged down by a visiting defender and Winders pounced on the rebound but Leonard got across smartly to parry his shot. Continued Borough possession saw a Paul Honeybun shot blocked while Leonard was forced to punch away a Diaper free kick under pressure and when Diaper latched on to a misplaced defensive pass, his shot went inches wide. Therefore it was no surprise when Borough took the lead on 58 minutes when Alex Grimason threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Rodrigo Pons who outpaced the Recreation defence running through from the centre circle to the edge of the area before finishing with a superb strike past the advancing Leonard. Hamworthy pushed forward looking for a way back and on 71 minutes Cris Rigler carved out some space wide on the left before slipping the ball inside to substitute Kane Andrews whose close range effort curled just the wrong side of the upright. Another chance for Rec came on 81 minutes when a deep cross from the right picked out Brett who headed over. Borough had chances to make the game safe, first on 83 minutes when Kenny Strong, on for the injured Diaper, slid a pass into the path of Martin Sault who was forced wide as he ran into the area, but did well to get a shot in from a tight angle which flashed across the goal mouth. And a minute later Danielle Salderigga, making his Borough debut from the bench, broke clear down the left but his firm drive went narrowly the wrong side of the far post. Into the closing minutes a final chance for Recreation saw a long ball forward to Brett, but he hooked his shot wide and Borough were able to celebrate a victory which saw them move above their opponents into third place in the table. |
