Premier League Cup - Semi-Final
Borough fell to their first home defeat of the season with clinical finishing the difference between the two sides as Portland United took control of the Dorset Premier League Cup Semi final after opening the scoring near the hour mark, and with Borough forced to chase the game, the Blues took the opportunity to score twice more and cruise into the finals. Portland started brighter and pushed Borough back for the first 10 minutes without significantly troubling Hornets keeper Andy Knights. However as the half progressed the best chances came from the home side, starting on 14 minutes when Rodrigo Pons floated in a deep free kick from the edge of he centre circle and Alex Grimason stole in from the right to get onto the end of the cross but was only able to volley the ball over from 5 yards out. Two minutes later an angled ball from the left picked out James Pinder, in a similar position in line with the right hand post, but again the final shot cleared the bar. A minute later Pinder latched onto a clearance from a corner 20 yards out and sent in a long range dipping effort which went narrowly over. Further Borough pressure saw the Hornets calling for two penalty decisions in quick succession after Joe Toghill twice went down in the area under challenge from a home defender, but the referee waved away both appeals. Back came Portland and following a trademark quick counter attack on 21 minutes, Knights did well to palm away a shot on the turn. But Borough were still in the ascendency and visiting keeper Nick Carroll had to be on his toes to save at full stretch after Danny Gibbons latched onto a high ball into the area from Kenny Strong. Portlands best chance of the half came 10 minutes from the break when a close range effort from a left wing corner to the near post was blasted over the bar, but it was still the visiting defence who were being worked harder and on 40 minutes they were forced to scramble the ball clear after Pinder send in a dangerous cross from the right. Half Time 0-0. Borough continued to push their visitors back early into the secong half and four minutes after the restart Carroll failed to hold a cross from the left and the ball fell to Gibbons on the ground, but he only managed to scoop his shot over the bar. A minute later Gibbons turned provider, breaking clear down the right before holding the ball to allow Rodrigo Pons to get into the area and his inch perfect cross picked out the Argentinean whose downward header from close range forced a superb reaction save from Carroll as he somehow steered the ball over the bar. Borough had a let off on 55 minutes when a long ball forward sent Lewis Whyton through but his final shot was off target. However the Blues snatched the all important first goal three minutes later when Alex Halloran got on the end of a left wing corner with a glancing header at the near post to steer the ball home. 0-1. The Hornets came agonisingly close to equalising on 62 minutes when a Ryan Moore centre picked out Pons unmarked by the right hand post, but his header went over, and two minutes later Pinder cut in from the left and got in a low shot on target, but Carroll collected via a defenders boot. However Borough suffered a further set-back on 70 minutes when, with the home defence appealing for offside, the ball was fed through to Adam Linaker in space on the left and the Blues striker tucked the ball home at the second attempt, after Knights blocked the first shot. 0-2. To their credit, Borough continued to push forward looking for a way back, and on 75 minutes Adam Watsons cross from the right was met with a flying volley from Gibbons but unfortunately the shot was straight at Carroll. With Borough pushing forward in numbers they were caught on the break by Halloran on 81 minutes who took the ball past Knights but shot over with the goal at his mercy. But there was no let off for the Hornets four minutes later when a headed clearance from Strong was latched onto by substitute John Lamb, who buried a low shot into the bottom right hand corner from the edge of the area. 0-3. |
