Senior Cup - 1st Round Borough fell to their first defeat of the season to go out of the Dorset Senior Cup at the first hurdle, but the scoreline flattered the home side as the Hornets more than matched their Wessex League opponents until in the final stages of the match, when Ross Mills was yellow carded twice in the space of a minute and the Rockies took advantage to make the game safe. Playing up the slope, Borough had the best of the early exchanges and should have taken the lead in the fourth minute when James Pinder sent in a deep cross from wide on the right and Martin Sault got clear of his marker at the far post, but his first time volley went wide. It was Shaftesbury however who took the lead three minutes later when a defence splitting pass allowed Reece Schell through on goal and he neatly slotted past Lee Rockingham in the Borough goal. Borough came close to equalising on nine minutes when Pinder latched on to a diagonal ball into the Shaftesbury area but his shot across goal went narrowly wide of the left hand post while four minutes later Simon Landers got on the end of a Pinder cross but shot over. The Rockies had a chance to double their lead on 16 minutes when a drive from the right flashed across the Borough goal, and should have done better when they again breached the Borough defence on 21 minutes with a quick ball down the slope, but with the striker clear through on goal, he steered his shot wide. Further Borough pressure saw a close range effort from Pinder deflected wide and another scare for the Rockies on 33 minutes saw the home keeper mis-kick a backpass and with the ball deflected goalwards he managed to recover in time to hack it clear. Just before the break Honeybun floated a free kick into the Shaftesbury area and Anthony Winders was first to the ball but his shot cleared the bar. Half Time 1-0. Within two minutes of the restart, Pinder forced a fine save from the home keeper who blocked a shot from a tight angle at point blank range. However against the run of play the Hornets found themselves two goals down on 51 minutes when another swift counter attack down the left saw the ball centered to Reece Schell six yards out to sidefoot home. Back came Borough and on 55 minutes Pinder saw a drive from the edge of the area tipped onto the crossbar by the home keeper, but from the resulting corner the ball fell to Mills inside the goal area and although his first chance was blocked by the gloveman he tucked home the rebound. Borough now put extreme pressure on the home back line as they pushed forward looking for the equaliser and Landers saw a header go just over while the same player drove in a shot from a corner through a sea of bodies, but the keeper was fortunate to be standing in the right spot to collect. It seemed only a matter of time before Borough would draw level, but on 83 minutes after bring cautioned for dissent following an off the ball incident, Mills was almost immediately involved in a challenge as the game restarted and was shown a second yellow card to be dismissed. And with Borough reeling, Shaftesbury took full advantage a minute later as they cut through the Borough back line again and although Rockingham managed to block the initial shot the rebound was converted by Gee Williams. To their credit, Borough continued to made in roads looking for a way back and they narrowly failed to convert a number of chances from crosses into the penalty area including a curling ball in from Paul Honeybun which somehow alluded both forwards and defence, but deep in injury time after Rockingham had done well to punch a long range effort over the bar, the resulting corner picked out Lee Hale at the near post who diverted the ball into the net. |
