Premier League For the second week in succession Borough struggled to convert a dominant performance into goals against a youthful Sturminster Newton side, however having gone ahead midway through the second half, there was little danger they would surrender their lead. It was all one way traffic for the majority of the first half but Borough were unable to fashion their strong approach play into more than a handful of half chances, the first coming on 11 minutes when James Pinder sent in a cross from the right which just alluded Darryl Williams, while on 18 minutes Pinder was again provider as he pulled the ball back to Martin Sault who was unable to get enough power on his shot to trouble Garfield Charles in the home goal. On 28 minutes Salte drove in a shot from the edge of the area which was deflected wide, while five minutes later Ross Mills got his head to a Honeybun free kick which dropped narrowly the wrong side of the post. However the Hornets could have found themselves a goal behind on the stroke of half time when Sturminster created their first real chance on goal after a break down the left, but Dan Burton did well to save with his legs. Half Time 0-0. Borough stepped up the pressre after the break and Pinder came close immediately after the restart with a low drive which went just wide. On 52 minutes a scramble in the Cherries goal saw the ball come out to Honeybun on the edge of the area and his return shot was cleared off the line by a defender while Mills attempted to squeeze the rebound inside the right hand post but his shot was hooked wide . Sturminsters first chance of the half came on 63 minutes, with a free kick which curled just past the right hand upright, but a minute later Borough took the lead when Dan Young broke down the right before sending in a perfectly weighted cross and Simon Landers, who had only been on for three minutes, arrived unmarked at the far post to head home. Further Borough pressure saw Mills carve out some space down the left before crossing to Landers whose downwards header bounced up and over the bar. Sadly ill discipline from the Cherrys senior players left them berating the referee at every opportunity rather then concentrate on getting back in the game and Borough came close to doubling the lead on 82 minutes when Steve Tricky battled through on the left before cutting inside and squaring to Mills whose close range effort was cleared off the line. And in the final minutes Landers twice went close heading a Lee Diaper cross narrowly over and after latching on to a long free kick, flicked on by Mills he steered a shot on the volley just wide. |
