Borough came away with their first win at Churchill Close since Sturminster Marshall returned to the DPL, but with the Hornets not capitalising on their overall supremacy, the home side sensed they were still in the game in the final minutes, and Borough found themselves having to hang on to their narrow lead to secure victory. The Hornets started brightly and carved out an early chance in the second minute when Ross Mills latched onto a free kick from the left, but his shot was blocked by a defender. Two minutes later Mariusz Iglewski got on the end of a corner with a diving header but the ball went wide. Sturminster were forced to replace their keeper around the quarter of an hour mark after he was injured following a clash with his own defender, with ex-Borough gloveman Paul Maitland taking over between the sticks. And all the pressure remained on the home goal, with James Pinder on 21 minutes firing in a shot from outside the area which went narrowly over. Their dominance finally paid off for Borough on 28 minutes when a corner was only cleared as far as Rodrigo Pons wide on the right and his cross back into the area was met with a stooping header from Iglewski which looped over the defence and into the top left corner of the net. 0-1. The goal spurred Borough on and within a minute Iglewski nearly doubled the lead as he carved out space with a twisting run into the area but his final shot was just off target. Pons forced a fine save from Maitland on 35 minutes with a low drive from the left while two minutes later a Danny Gibbons shot from a corner was cleared off the line. On 41 minutes Pons was presented with a golden opportunity as he intercepted a poor defensive header back to Maitland but lifted his shot over the bar. Maitland though was fortunate to remain on the pitch in first half stoppage time as he executed an appalling neck high challenge on Sean Gallagher as he looked to latch onto a through ball in the area, before throwing the Borough striker to the ground, but inexplicably the keeper received just a yellow card, and to add further insult Maitland saved the resulting spot kick from Steve Tricky. Half Time 0-1 Borough continued to control the game after the break, but struggled to turn their good approach play into shots on target as demonstrated on 53 minutes when Gallagher broke clear of the home defence to latch on to a long ball forward from Andy Knights but the final shot went wide. The Hornets had a clear penalty shout on 62 minutes after Adam Watson had his shirt pulled as he tried to latch onto a cross from the left, but the referee waved away the appeals. On 71 minutes, Toghill was sent clear down the left but Maitland was quick out of his area to make a telling interception, while a minute later the home gloveman was equal to a 25 yard curling free kick from Watson. It took until the 74th minute for Stur to create their first clear chance when an angled shot on the turn went narrowly wide, but this spurred on the home side and on 81 minutes Borough had to survive a goal mouth scramble with Ross Mills heading off the line. Borough still had chances to kill the game off and on 86 minutes Gallagher sent Toghill into space down the left, but his final shot went over, and within a minute Toghill again broke through, but this time he elected to cross and a home defender was on hand to clear. But as the game moved into injury time it weas the Hornets who were forced to defend in numbers as first a Sturminster shot ricocheted into the path of a home forward, just inside the area and his low drive went just the wrong side of the post, while in almost the last kick of the game a left wing corner from the home side was met by a far post header which was only narrowly off target. |
