Dorset Premier League
Monday 13th April 2009

Swanage Town & Herston took on Poole Borough today in the Dorset Premier League at Day's Park with Swans looking to grab three points with a win that would see them leapfrog their visitors into second place in the table. In an entertaining encounter, Swans ran out easy winners by three goals, having created numerous chances, which might, on another day, have seen the home side double their tally.

The match was pretty even for the opening quarter of an hour as both sides battled away in the middle of the park underneath the Bank Holiday Monday seaside sunshine, but failed to make any headway. But on 17 minutes, Jacob Harrop played a super through ball for Jamie Holland to race onto, and he was brought down just inside the box for a penalty, which Jacob Harrop smashed home with his right foot, sending the Poole keeper the wrong way to give Swans the lead.

Borough sought to get back at Swans but then a harmless looking cross from the right by Gary Bartlett, on 23 minutes, was allowed to bounce a couple of times in their own area by a flat footed and hesitant visitors' defence, and Jacob Harrop nipped in to hook the ball into the net from close range to give Swans a two goal lead.

Poole's best chance of the half came on 41 as an advancing striker lashed a shot just wide of Nick Taylor's goal, but despite a decent period of possession, the Hornets didn't threaten the home goal, and Swans went in at the break looking very comfortable.

Half Time 2-0.

The first ten minutes after the turnaround saw the ball in the air for the majority of the time, with neither side looking to break through eithers defence. On 53 minutes, Harrop was neatly played through down the left, and he raced into a one on one situation with the Poole keeper, but what should have been his hat-trick goal only produced groans all round as he blazed the ball well over.

Borough then enjoyed some territorial advantage for the next ten minutes, but again, failed to test Taylor in the home goal. On 66 minutes two great chances came Swans' way, but the visiting goalie made two fine saves, first from Bartlett and then Harrop to keep his side in the game.

A Richard Sands floated cross from the right on 71 was then met beautifully at the far post by Harrop, who was unlucky to see his powerful header cannon off the post. A Borough inswinging corner two minutes later bounced off the top of the Swans crossbar, but that was only a brief foray into the Swans area, as the home side looked to finish the job off in the final 15 minutes.

Holland had a superb chance to score after being played in by Harrop, but could only produce a weak attempted lob into the advancing keeper's arms. The third goal eventually came on 87 however, after Harrop surged down the left, played the ball into the path of Gary Bartlett, who neatly sidestepped his marker before curling in an absolute beauty of a shot into the far corner, from the edge of the box.

It was no more than Swanage deserved for their impressive display, and they could have added another a minute into added time when a scorching break down the left involving Holland and Harrop resulted in the latter's fine drive being excellently saved by the Poole keeper.
