Premier League Cup : 2nd Round - 1st Leg
Borough produced a below par performance against Jason Philip's resurgent Swans side, but can count themselves fortunate that the home side were unable to convert a number of second hand chances, leaving the Hornets still in the tie with the second leg scheduled for two weeks time. After an even opening few minutes, the first clear chance fell to former Borough striker Jamie Holland, whose low angled drive was collected well by Dan Burton. On 15 minutes Lee Thomas tested Swans keeper Jimmy Hollywood with a fierce shot from a tight angle which the keeper palmed away for a corner. On 19 minutes an Alex Grimason sliced clearance resulted on a scramble in the Borough area before the visiting defence finally cleared, but there was little else to separate the sides until the 34th minute when a Swanage free kick on the left hand edge of the area was floated in towards the far post and Jamie Beale arrived unmarked to head home. 1-0. Further Swans pressure saw Burton get down smartly to block a low drive from 20 yards out and on 42 minutes Beale broke clear down the right before cutting inside but his final shot was wide of the left hand post. Immediately before the break, Borough carved out their best move of the half when Wayne Crutcher sent John Bates down the right and he whipped in a first time cross from the by-line which picked out Martin Sault 10 yards out, but his header went narrowly over. Half Time 1-0. Borough came close to levelling within 10 minutes of the restart when Simon Landers got his head to a Lee Thomas free kick from wide on the right, but the chance went wide. However with Borough committing numbers forward, gaps began to appear at the back and on 61 minutes a Swanage break away down the left was only denied by a brave block from the advancing Burton and when the loose ball fell to Holland, he shot wide with the goal at his mercy. With the Swans now upping the tempo, Burton was called upon again on 66 minutes to make a fine save to deny Holland, while six minutes later another Swanage break down the left saw a shot converted at the second attempt after Burton again denied the initial strike, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Borough pushed Ross Mills into the attack, giving them three up front, and began to look dangerous again in the opposition half, with Pinder forcing a block from Hollywood on 75 minutes after Sault sent him through on the left. However the Hornets survived another scare on 81 minutes when Burton came out to claim an over hit forward pass, but spilled the ball, allowing a home forward a shot on goal, but the Borough keeper recovered quickly to claim the rebound. The Hornets continued to rely on hopeful balls forward as a springboard for their attacks but with the home defence focused on getting between the Borough strikers and the ball to block their runs, the visitors found their forays forward continually frustrated. However as if to prove that a passing game could unlock the Swans defence, on 86 minutes Pinder started and ended a good move down the left with a long range effort which went narrowly over, leaving Borough with some 'food for thought' for the second leg. |
