James Stickland slots home the loose ball to complete his hat-trick

A hat-trick from James Stickland, the first from a Borough player this season, appeared to have set the Hornets up for a comfortable victory as they cruised into a four goal lead. But the Cranes stuck well to their task, replying with a two goal salvo mid way through the second half to give themselves a lifeline and the Hornets some difficult moments prior to the final whistle.

Borough had the best of the early exchanges, but it took until 14 minutes for them to test visiting keeper Andy Loader as Sean Gallagher unleashed a low drive from just inside the area, which the gloveman pushed past the post. And the Hornets deservedly took the lead five minutes later when Loader could only parry a long range effort from James Pinder and Stickland was on hand to tuck home the rebound. 1-0.

Cranborne however had two gilt edged chances to draw level as first Jack Smith broke through on goal, but Dan Burton was out quickly to block, and Burton again denied the Cranes as he parried a close range shot after a visiting striker latched onto a left wing cross at the near post

But Borough put those scares behind them on 31 minutes when Pinder again found space down the right and floated in a cross to the far post, which Stickland met with a downward header, and although Loader got a hand to the ball, he was unable to keep it out. 2-0.

Loader was in action again on 40 minutes, pushing a low drive from Pinder past the post, however Cranborne had another clear goal scoring chance two minutes later as Gary Clarke got behind the Borough back line, but Burton did well to force him wide and the final shot was off target.

With the first half moving into stoppage time, Pinder increased Borough’s lead as he steered home a low cross from the right by Martin Warren at the far post. 3-0.

Half Time 3-0.

Within four minutes of the restart, the Hornets looked to have put the game beyond Cranborne as Loader spilled a Pinder cross from the left at the near post and Stickland stabbed the ball home for his first Borough hat-trick. 4-0.

Ollie Hepworth though pulled a goal back for the Cranes from the penalty spot on 54 minutes after Steve Tricky committed a foul in the area 4-1.

Borough however should have restored their lead two minutes later when Gallagher forced his way into the area and unselfishly squared to Adam Watson in front of goal, but his first time shot went the wrong side of the upright.

The visitors gave themselves a slim lifeline on 69 minutes when a free kick cannoned off the Borough wall into the path of Gary Clarke stationed in the area who gratefully converted the rebound. 4-2.

However within a minute Borough had restored their three goal advantage after some good close play on the edge of the area resulted in Pinder being sent clear on goal and he tucked the ball under Loader. 5-2.

Further Borough pressure saw Anthony Winders flick on a free kick to Gallagher, whose shot on the turn was denied by Loader and Winders was provider again minutes later, heading on a cross into the path of Pinder but the final shot cleared the bar.

The Cranes again reduced the deficit on 84 minutes when Dan Loader hammered home an unstoppable free kick from 25 yards out. 5-3.

However although Burton was called upon to save a full stretch a minute later, Borough tightened up to ensure there was no way back for the Cranes.
