With the game at stalemate on full time, it took a header from Sean Gallagher in the first half of extra time to separate the sides as Borough progressed into the quarter finals of the Dorset Senior Cup at the expense of their fieriest rivals.

Holt created the first chance on four minutes when a downward header from a free kick picked out Tom Willis 10 yards out but his resulting shot went wide of the upright.

On 8 minutes a great pass from Brad Asagba sent Joe Toghill into space in the area but a visiting defender got a leg in to deflect the final shot wide, although the referee inexpiably awarded a goal kick. However with the game flowing from end to end, Jakub Malara in the Boro goal had to be alert on 11 minutes to palm away a low drive.

Borough came close again on 23 minutes when Toghill varied his corner by pulling the ball back to Max Wilcox on the edge of the area and his first time drive narrowly cleared the bar.

However as the half progressed the tide began to turn in the visitors favour and on 26 minutes Malara again kept his side level as he blocked shot from point blank range by his right hand post, while the Boro keeper also denied Simon Edwards twice in the space of two minutes. On 42 minutes Malara was again called into action when Willis was teed up with a clear shot on goal, but the keeper saved with his legs.

Just before the break however, Borough had the ball in the back of the net, when Asagba converted a left wing cross from Kenny Strong, but the referee disallowed the goal for an offside in the build up.

Half Time 0-0

Within seconds of the restart Borough again came close when James Pinder slipped through the Holt defence before firing a shot towards the top corner bur Leigh Mitchener athletically tipped the ball over.

At the other end Borough had to survive a series of corners with Malara claiming the ball in all but one occasion when Kenny Strong was on the line to clear.

On 62 minutes another penetrating run took Pinder to the edge of the Holt area, with his final shot deflected past the post and from the resulting corner, Ross Mills headed inches wide.

As the half progressed Borough were forced to soak up increasing pressure, but the home defence held firm and nearly caught Holt on the break on 69 minutes when Toghill sent Sean Gallagher through from the halfway line, but after cutting inside on the edge of the area, he shot just over.

Into the last 15 minutes the introduction of fresh legs saw Borough began to push their opponents back but Holt nearly capitalised on the break as a low cross from the left picked out Edwards one on one against Malara, but the Boro keeper made another fine block, while from the rebound a blazing drive cannoned off the crossbar.

As the half came to a close, the Holt defence found themselves under the cosh, and a minute from full time, Borough were denied a stonewall penalty after Gallagher was tripped as he battled into the area, but the referee waved away the Hornets’ protests, sending the game into extra time.

Full Time: 0-0.

Borough continued to push their opponents back at the start of extra time and within the first minute Mitchener was forced to deny Toghill after he battled his way into the area. However the game turned on an incident five minutes into the half when Holt’s Kris Henshall was shown a straight red card following an altercation with Gallagher.

And within two minutes the Hornets took the lead when a free kick on the right was floated into the area and Gallagher rose above the Holt defence to head home, launching wild celebrations from the Borough players. 1-0.

Holt threw themselves forward looking for a way back, but the Borough defence coped well with the onslaught, and the Hornets nearly sealed victory midway through the second period when Martin Warren centred to Maciej Jaksztas whose downward header came back off the base of the post.

However an additional goal was not required for Borough to progress to the next round, and another all DPL tie at Sturminster Marshall.
