Boro keeper Jakub Malara punching clear under pressure

In a classic game of two halves, Borough controlled proceedings in the first period and deservedly turned around a goal ahead. However after the break Rec stepped up the pressure, with the turning point of the match coming after Martin Sault was dismissed for a second yellow card, and Borough were unable to hold out against the league leaders, who secured their first double against the Hornets in six seasons.

Borough had to make a late change as Steve Tricky failed a fitness test while Anthony Winders returned to the squad and Alex Grimason made his 50th start for the Hornets.

Rec created the first chance on six minutes when a long range shot from Jamie Moors was tipped past the post by home keeper Jakub Malara.

But within a minute Borough took the lead following a breakaway as Lukasz Balinski carried the ball out of defence to the edge of the centre circle before sending an inch perfect pass down the middle allowing James Stickland to outpace the last defender before slotting past Kevin Leonard. 1-0.

Borough worked well in all areas of the pitch to negate the threat from Rec’s trademark counter attacks, and on 20 minutes Anthony Winders made a fine block to deny a visiting forward as he looked to drive home a cross from the right.

Rec were increasingly restricted to long range efforts and Jamie Moores came close with a low drive from 30 yards out which flashed just wide of the left upright.

However on 35 minutes Borough came close to increasing their lead when Matt White picked up a pass in the area, but he blasted his first time shot over the bar.

Half time 1-0

Rec stepped up a gear immediately following the restart and saw and early low shot go narrowly wide. On 53 minutes Moores steered a low cross wide from close range, but within 30 seconds he was through again and this time made no mistake in slotting home. 1-1.

Borough were dealt a double blow on 57 minutes when Sault was shown his second yellow card after an altercation in the middle of the park, and the resulting free kick to Rec picked out Moores unmarked in the area who placed his header beyond Malara. 1-2.

In a bid to get back into the game, Borough pushed men forward, leaving gaps at the back and more than once they had to rely on Malara’s speed out of goal to deny a forward breaking through. However on 73 minutes Mike Notley got behind the Borough defence and stabbed the ball past Malara to increase the lead. 1-3.

Borough were still creating chances and Leonard had to be down quickly to collect a dipping free kick from Balinski while on 80 minutes a long throw from Gallagher saw the ball headed on to Martin Warren, but his shot cleared the bar.

Another Rec break away saw substitute Sam Goodwin denied by the post, while at the other end good work from Gallagher saw him whip in a cross from the right which Warren got his head to but was unable to steer the ball goalwards.
