A below par first half performance on a very heavy pitch saw Borough turn around a goal behind, however after the break the Hornets had the best of the possession but having twice had to come from behind, they were unable to conjure up a winning goal. John Bates made his 100th appearance for the Hornets but ended up being shown a red card for a second bookable offence in the final minutes as did two players from Parley as both sides suffered from some over fussy referring in an otherwise entertaining game at Turlin Moor.

Borough carved out an early chance as Martin Sault threaded a perfectly weighted pass down the middle, allowing James Pinder to latch onto the ball but Matt Harvey in the home goal stretched well to palm the final shot wide.

Parley however showed they were a threat on 8 minutes when a good build up opened up the home defence, giving their forward a clear shot on goal but the effort was off target. However there were no such problems three minutes later when a Parley break down the left saw the ball centred to Sam Hollidge who had time to pick his spot and fire home past the advancing Dan Burton. 0-1.

Four weeks without a game showed in the Hornets approach play and at times they looked second best against their opponents, but as the half moved into the final 10 minutes Borough began to find their stride and Martin Warren signalled their intent with a 25 yard strike on the turn which went narrowly over.

On 38 minutes Borough came within a whisker of equalising when Ross Mills headed on a free kick across goal and Pinder got on the end of the ball but his header was scrambled off the line by Harvey.

However minutes later Borough were on the back foot and Mills did well to intercept under pressure following a quick Parley break away, while from the resulting corner Sault had to be sharp at the near post to head clear.

Just before the break Borough came close again to drawing level when Pinder cut into the area from the right before pulling the ball back to Warren, who was unfortunate to see his close range goal bound effort cannon off a defender.

Half Time 0-1.

Borough had a let off only two minutes after the restart when Parley’s Robbie Fox broke through down the middle but Burton stood his ground at the edge of the area before saving at the forward’s feet.

The majority of the play however was in the Parley half, and Borough’s pressure finally paid off on 64 minutes when Warren sent a high ball from the left towards the far post which Partick Murray steered back into the area picking out Maciej Jaksztas who fired home from close range. 1-1.

A good Borough move on 68 minutes sent Pinder down the left and his low cross was only cleared to Alex Grimason, but he fired his final shot over, while a minute later Warren sent in a long range dipping shot that narrowly cleared the bar.

Parley found themselves down to 10 men on 70 minutes when a defender picked up a second booking following a late tackle on Jaksztas. However the visitors response was to restore their lead two minutes later when another quick counter attack down the right saw the ball fed to the near post where a shot past Burton was steered across the line by Ben Bosley. 1-2.

Back came Borough and on 72 minutes Bates got in a near post shot from a right wing corner which was cleared off the line, while at the other end Hollidge headed wide when well placed. However further Borough pressure saw them deservedly drew level on 78 minutes when an Adam Watson free kick fell to Ross Mills on the penalty spot who controlled the ball with his chest before firing low past Harvey. 2-2.

Borough pushed forward looking for the winner and within a minute of the goal Harvey did well to save at Pinder’s feet after Watson had sent the home striker through down the right, while the visiting keeper also collected a Sault glancing header seconds later.

But the game ended on a controversial note when two minutes from full time a challenge in the Borough half resulted in both Bates and Parley’s Dan Hiscock being shown their second yellow cards increasing the tally of sending off to three, a statistic which bore no relation to the good spirit in which the game was played.
