Borough saw their eight game unbeaten run come to an end at Turlin Mooor, as the fixture congestion appeared to take its toll on the Hornets in the second half and Portland scored three goals in seven minutes to take the game away from the hosts.

For the second game in a row injuries and absences meant striker Sean Gallagher had to stand in between the sticks, but he could not be faulted for any of the goals as the Blues Lewis Whyton bagged a hat-trick to set up the victory.

Borough started the stronger and on 13 minutes a long range effort from Martin Warren was only taken by Portland keeper Nick Carroll at the second attempt. On 17 minutes a Borough corner was headed on to Matt White but he just failed to get his shot on target from close range.

However a minute later Borough took the lead when a Dominic Allen cross from the right was met with a bullet header from Warren which gave Carroll no chance. 1-0.

Borough though only held the lead for two minutes as after a goal mouth scramble the ball was sent back into the Hornets area and Whyton connected with a looping header over Gallagher 1-1.

As the half progressed, the best chances were created by the visitors and on 30 minutes a cross from the right rattled the crossbar, while four minutes later the bar was struck again this time denying a header from a corner.

However five minutes from the break, White got clear of the Portland defence after latching on to a through ball, but his first time shot went over.

Half Time 1-1.

The Blues came out stronger after the break and took the lead on 55 minutes when Borough struggled to clear a forward pass and Whyton latched onto the loose ball to convert with a dipping shot from 25 yards out. 1-2.

Worse was to come for Borough two minutes later when a quick Portland break down the left saw the ball whipped into the goal area and Whyton was on hand to stab home from close range to complete his hat-trick. 1-3.

And the game was effectively over on 62 minutes when Mitch Conning steered home a left wing corner. 1-4.

However to their credit Borough kept battling, and after being pushed forward to bolster the Hornets attack, Ross Mills forced a fine save from Carroll with a low drive from the edge of the area, which the Blues keeper pushed past the post.

And Mills was denied a consolation goal a minute from the final whistle as he latched on to a ball over the visiting defence but his shot came back off the right hand post.
