Dorset Premier League
Saturday 31st October 2009

The Hornets had to battle hard to come out on top in a very entertaining end to end game at Turlin Moor, which kept supporters on tender-hooks right up to the injury time goal which secured the points for ‘The Borough’.

The game started off tentatively, but was brought to life when on 8 mins a good ball into the Sherborne box found Joe Toghill who intelligently turned is marker in the box before unselfishly picking out Max Wilcox who sloted the ball under visiting keeper Ashley Knibbs from the around the penalty spot 1-0.

Sherborne responded and a ball in from the left found Ian Jenkins in space just outside the area, however he could only blaze his shot over.

Poole had a chance to double their lead on 20 mins when Lucasz Balinski was put thorough on goal, beating the offside trap but despite being one on one with Knibbs he shot inches wide of the right hand post.

Sherborne put pressure on the Borough defence with several attacks, the best of these came on 28 mins when a cross shot from the left from Ryan Trevett struck Jakub Malara's left hand post before being cleared to safety.

Poole retort a minute later saw Adam Watson cut the ball back from the right wing to Alex Grimason who was very unlucky to see an excellent strike from outside the penalty area beat Knibbs but come back off the bar.

On 40 mins Balinski gathered the ball in the box and rounded the gloveman only to see his shot from an acute angle cleared by a defender with the home players appealing that the ball had crossed the line.

Sherborne countered with a break down the right which saw a drive from a visiting striker beat Malara before coming back off the left hand post, while on 43 mins a corner from Sherborne was cleared under pressure by a Borough defender.

Half Time 1-0

The second half continued to be an end to end affair with the first good chance falling to Toghill on 54 mins when he was put through by Wilcox and dribbled past 2 defenders before seeing his shot well saved by Knibbs.

On 58 mins Sherborne had the chance to even the score when a corner on the right was cleared just outside the Borough box, however the ball back in was deemed by the referee to have struck the hand of a Hornet defender and a penalty was awarded. With Borough supporters fearing the worse Malara pulled off a fine save from the spot kick with the home defemce quick to tidy up after the initial block.

Sherborne continued to force play and were unfortunate when a cross from the left on 72 mins just evaded the outstretched foot of a visiting striker.

Borough continued to look dangerous on the break and on 75 minutes substitute Gallagher picked up an excellent through ball on the left and outsprinted a square visiting defence before cooly slotting his shot past Knibbs. 2-0

To their credit the visitors never gave up and when Borough defence failed to adequately clear an 88th minute corner, the ball was returned into the mellay and Jenkins deservedly slotted home to set-up a tense final few minutes. 2-1.

And with Sherborne’s tails were up, Malara had to be at his best to turn a 25 yard shot around the post.

However Borough continued to pose a threat going forward and 3 mins into stoppage time Jaksztas cleverly released Toghill who finished clinically past Knibbs to seal victory. 3-1.

An excellent game played in a very sporting way which served up good entertainment for the crowd.
