Senior Cup - Quarter Final
Borough progressed into the Dorset Senior Cup semi-finals for the first time in their history but at 2-1 up in the second half, they had to soak up significant pressure from the home side before finally breaking free and scoring twice more in the last 5 minutes to seal the tie. The Hornets were quick out of the blocks and after forcing an early corner, Lukasz Balinski was picked out from the flag kick, but he blasted his close range effort over. On 4 minutes Kenny Strong got on the end of an excellent left wing cross from Dominic Allen but steered his far post header just over the bar. However against the run of play, Stur broke the deadlock on 5 minutes when a fine angled ball into the area found a home striker who had the time and space to slot past Jakub Malara. 1-0. The home side though only held the lead for four minutes before another Borough corner resulted in a goal mouth scramble with Ross Mills getting the final touch to hammer the ball home from 10 yards out. 1-1. Borough continued to maintain the initiative and Allen shot narrowly wide with a low volley while Strong got his head to a right wing cross from Staples but again the chance was just off target. But the Hornets pressure finally paid off on 32 minutes as a determined Balinski stole the ball from a home defender wide on the right before pulling it back to Martin Warren who finished with a superb drive from the edge of the area. 1-2. Half time: 1-2 The second half saw Stur benefitting from a strong breeze which blew up in their favour and they put the Hornets under sustained pressure from the restart. However the Borough defence coped well with the early offensive, with the best chance for the home side coming after a long range free kick from Shane Duggan forced Malara into a scrambling save by his right hand post. Sturs biggest threat came from the pace of Luke Stone, after he came off the bench, but Steve Tricky matched him at the back and when the former Borough striker did break through wide on the right, Malara was quick to block the resulting cross. It took half an hour of the second half before Borough carved out their first real chance as the ball was fed across the edge of the area to Phil Staples whose shot through a sea of legs drifted wide. The chance appeared to kick start Boroughs attacking flair and on 85 minutes James Pinder broke down the left before cutting inside and centring to Ross Edwards whose run into the area saw him tripped by a defender, but the referee allowed the game to run on and Patrick Murray tucked home the loose ball. 1-3. And a minute into injury time Borough chalked up their fourth goal as Tricky sent over a perfectly weighted cross from the left and Murray connected with a diving header to beat Knights just inside his right hand post. 1-4. |
