Borough crashed to their third home defeat of the season following a below par performance at Turlin Moor as an early goal for the visitors saw the Hornets chasing the game for the remainder of the match leaving Wincanton the opportunity to exploit gaps at the back to increase their lead and take the game away from the home side. Playing against a strong breeze, Borough had the worst possible start on 7 minutes when a free kick was launched into the Hornets areas and although an initial shot was charged down, Mike Cooper latched onto the rebound to hammer the ball home. 0-1. On 10 minutes Jakub Malara was forced to make a fine scrambling save to deny a close range effort from Tom Green. However within a minute a quick forward pass picked out James Pinder in space down the middle and his low drive flashed just wide of the right hand upright. Borough carved out another good chance on 21 minutes when a headed flick on from Anthony Winders picked out Martin Warren, but the resulting shot was collected by Alan Clements in the visitors goal. Wincanton though doubled their lead on 24 minutes when the Borough defence failed to fully clear a long pass forward and the loose ball was sent back over the home defence allowing Darren White through on goal, to slot past Malara. 0-2. Three minutes later Borough had a let off when Green again got behind the Borough defence, but his final shot want wide. Borough however were dealt a further blow on 32 minutes when Pinder was shown a straight red card for an off the ball incident. Borough carved out their best chance of the half on 43 minutes when Matt White drilled a low centre across the area and Adam Watson was first to the ball but under pressure from a visiting defender was unable to get his shot on target. Wincanton were also reduced to 10 men on 44 minutes when Nick Ward was dismissed for a two footed challenge on Adam Watson. But on the stroke of half time the visitors again caught Borough on the break but saw the final effort cannon off the bar. Half time 0-2. Borough came out quickly after the break looking for a way back but Wincanton defended in numbers and the best early chance fell to Warren whose 25 yard effort drifted just past the post. Wincanton effectively put the game beyond Borough on 59 minutes when the home defence again struggled to clear the ball and it was fed through to Green who made no mistake in firing past Malara. 0-3. To their credit, Borough continued to push forwards and Matt White sent in a left wing cross to Winders whose downward header just failed to beat Clements, while substitute Scott Woodford broke into the area from the left and shot narrowly over. In the last 20 minutes Paul Harding sent a free kick narrowly wide of the upright while a Winders shot from 20 yards out just cleared the bar and Wodford was denied by Clements, leaving Borough without the consolation of a goal to show for an improved second half. |
