Premier League Cup
With James Pinder injured and Joe Toghill unavailable, the loss of both Max Wilcox and Dominic Allen in the first half left Borough fighting to maintain parity against a good Wincanton side, however after a penalty fest in the final minutes left the sides level, the visitors looked the fitter in extra time and hit two goals to deservedly to progress in the League Cup. Wincanton were the quicker out of the blocks, but Borough came close after four minutes when Wilcox flicked on a free kick to Phil Staples whose first time drive was parried by Alan Clements in the home goal and Bradley Asagbas shot on the rebound was blocked by a defender. Wilcox was replaced on 16 minutes folowing an eye injury and with the midfielders dominating chances were at a premium until the 25th minute when Jakub Malara was forced to make an outstanding save to palm away a long range drive destined for the top left hand corner. With their tails up Wincanton put Borough under the cosh and came close again on 27 minutes when a centre from the left picked out a forward in front of goal, but Malara blocked on the line while a minute later a low cross from the left picked out a visiting forward unmarked by the left hand post, but Malara was again across quickly to save with his legs. Borough began to get back into the game and on 37 minutes Ben Wright broke clear down the right and lifted the ball over the advancing Clements, but a defender got back to clear the ball off the line. On 40 minutes Borough again came close when the visiting defence failed to cut out a cross from the right and the ball fell toAllen whose a shot on the turn, forced Clements down smartly to collect. A minute from the break Allen fired in a low drive from 25 yards went just the wrong side of the upright, a remarkable achievement given that he was replaced at half time with a suspected fractured wrist. Half Time 0-0. Borough maintained the upper hand after the break and almost immediately from the restart Asagba made a battling run down the left which took him into the area, but his final shot hit the side netting. There was controversy on 56 minutes when Sean Gallagher was sent through on goal and Clements came out of his area and handled the ball as the Borough striker looked to knock it past him, but the referee gave the keeper just a yellow card. The Hornets were also unfortunate with the free kick which Mulvey curled over the wall but the ball cannoned off the crossbar. As the game began to open up, poor Borough defending on 59 minutes allowed a visiting forward a clear shot on goal, which Malara did well to block. However Borough also came close to breaking the deadlock four minutes later as an Asagba cross from the right picked out Gallagher unmarked, but his shot on the volley went over. While on 72 minutes Malara had to be on his toes again to collect a downward header from a corner. As the game moved into the final period Borough had another chance to break the stalemate on 82 minutes when a Gallagher cross from the left was dummied by Adam Watson and the ball came through to Bates, but he blasted his first time shot over the bar. Wincanton however broke the deadlock in the final minute of normal time when a forward went over under a challenge in the area and Darren White stepped up to slot home from the spot. 0-1. Borough pushed forward in numbers looking for a way back, and after a Mulvey right wing corner was headed off the line for another flag kick , the referee saw a push in the area as corner came over and Ross Mills converted the resulting penalty five minutes into injury time. 1-1. However that wasnt the end of the drama as Wincanton went straight down the other end and the referee awarded penalised a tackle by Alex Grimason with another penalty, but this time White put the spot kick wide and the game went into extra time. Full time 1-1. Wincanton looked the fresher side in extra time and White could well have put the visitors in front on 11 minutes of the first period when he latched onto a defensive error and fired in a low shot which struck the left hand post. However Wincanton took the lead half way through the second period when Malara made another fine block to deny White but substitute Ren Turnock latched onto the rebound and rifled the ball home. 1-2. And with Borough pressing forward looking for away back, they got caught on the break with White sent clear through on goal and he slotted past the advancing Malara to seal the tie. 1-3. |
