Senior Cup - Semi-final
Another big Senior Cup night and once again the Borough players did the the club and the DPL proud as they matched the Magpies for much of the game and left the Wessex Premier League leaders desperately defending for the final few minutes before escaping with a narrow victory. Wimborne created the first clear chance after three minutes when a fierce drive from former Borough striker Ben Thompson forced a superb one handed save at full stretch from Hornets keeper Jakub Malara. Borough came close on 7 minutes when a left wing cross from Steve Tricky picked out Lucasz Balinski in space on the right, but his shot was blocked at close range by Magpies keeper Alan Walker-Harris. However Wimborne turned defence into a swift attack as a quick breakaway sent Tom Clarke clear down the left and he lifted to ball over the advancing Malara to put the Wessex side one up. 1-0. Wimborne came close again on 11 minutes when a forward shot over from close range when well placed on the right and 6 minutes later the Magpies broke through again down the right but Malara was well positioned to collect the shot low down. Borough had their share of possession and within a minute both Dominic Allen and Balinski tested Walker-Harris with long range efforts. And on 21 minutes a deep free kick from the right was helped on by Maciej Jaksztas to James Stickland in space near the far post and his low shot beat Walker-Harris but cannoned off the outside of the right hand upright. The Hornets though were punished on 24 minutes when a poor cross field pass was intercepted by Wimborme allowing the ball to be fed wide to Kev James on the right, who steered a low centre across the face of the goal, allowing Gareth Barnes to tuckthe ball home at the far post. 2-0. The Hornets continued to push forward looking for a way back, and on 34 minutes Balinski had the ball in the back of the net following a corner, latching onto the resulting cross fed across the goal area, but the strike was ruled out for a very dubious offside. However in the final minutes of the half Malara again kept Borough in the game with a superb block to deny a forward who broke clear down the middle, while an later angled drive from Clarke came back of the bar with Tricky doing well to clear the loose ball. Half Time 2-0 Borough though were back in the game after only two minutes of the restart when Alex Grimason latched onto a poor defensive clearance on the edge of the area and his low drive took a deflection to beat Walker-Harris. 2-1. And the Hornets continued to have the best of the game with Balinski finding some some space down the right on 56 minutes before cutting the ball back to Grimason whose shot was taken high by Walker-Harris. It took over 20 minutes of the second period before Wimborne carved out their first chance when a close range effort went narrowly wide, while another attempt by the Magpies on 71 minutes saw a header steered narrowly over. Malara was again on hand on 77 minutes to make a fine save to collect a rising shot, while two minutes later at the other end Martin Sault's shot from a free kick was charged down by a defender. Borough's clearest chance of an equaliser came on 88 minutes when Walker-Harris failed to cut out a high corner resulting in a goal mouth scramble as the Hornets attempted to force the ball over the line and following the resulting melee both the Magpies keeper and Sean Gallagher were shown straight red cards. With the referee playing nearly 10 minutes of time added on, it was the Wessex League side who were forced onto the back foot and they were relieved to hear the final whistle which signaled their place in the final. |
