Allendale (1)1,
Poole Borough (0)0
Bankes Charity Cup Semi Final
16th May 2000

With a number of players either out injured or playing with knocks, Borough were unable to do themselves justice against the Combination side on their 3rd visit to Cuthbury in a row.

Playing down the hill in the first half, Borough created the best of the early exchanges. Alan Fooks shot just wide after latching onto a Ross Gulliver near post cross after 7 minutes, and Alex Gunn was unfortunate shortly after when he put a Lee Atkins centre over the bar.

It was a blow to Borough when Dave Holdroyd, obviously still suffering from the injury which kept him out of the cup final, went off after less than 10 minutes..

The quicker pace of the Combination side was noticeable, but a number of Allendale's attacks were beaten by the offside trap. At the other end Jamie Russell lobbed the ball into the area from outside the box, and Fooks got a head to it but could only steer it past the post.

The danger of an Allendale break away was underlined on 23 minutes, when Dan Burton got out quickly to clear the ball, but he could do nothing 2 minutes later when Gavin Scott was allowed a free run through the middle, and his shot was well placed into the bottom corner.

Allendale had the best of the remainder of the half, but Burton kept Borough in the match some excellent saves, the first when he stopped a low shot from outside the box and later with a tip over the bar from a close range shot.

HT 0-1

Borough came out from the start looking for an equaliser and Fooks was close only 2 minutes after the restart, when he flicked a bouncing ball just over the bar. Burton was still in the thick of the action and had to get down low to block a direct free kick.

Borough were further depleted when Paul Morrell went off with a knock after 49 minutes and Gulliver, who impressed on his return although not fully fit, was replaced mid way through the half

Allendale defended in numbers, and although Borough had the majority of the possession, they were unable to carve out many clear cut chances, the best of which came with Thompson cross which alluded everyone as it passed through the box, and an Atkins shot which looped over the bar.
