Poole Borough (0)0
Beaminster (1)3
Dorset County League Division 1
12th February 2000

Against their own standards, it was a disappointing Borough performance against a rejuvenated Beaminster side who took their chances and therefore deserved the victory.

Up against a strong wind, it was Borough who had the best of the early exchanges. Alex Gunn forced a save from the keeper with a low shot after 5 minutes, and James Russell saw his goal bound shot deflected after a neat 1-2 with Scott Smith.

As the half continued, Beaminster began to create the better chances and following a series of corners Borough were fortunate to scramble a shot off the line. On 19 minutes Dan Burton blocked a driven shot and did well to collect the rebound with the striker bearing down.

Both Russell and Paul Morrell had chances for Borough, but Beaminster continued to press and took the lead on 36 minutes, when a right wing cross was drilled in and found Phil Hussey unmarked on the far post to tuck the ball home.

Borough pushed forward for the equaliser, and Ron Denty was unfortunate to see his header from a left wing corner fly straight at the keeper.

HT 0-1

Ricky Burnside came on to replace Smith who picked up an ankle injury, as Borough pushed forward in numbers in an attempt to draw level.

Borough created a number of chances but were unable to apply the finishing touch against a packed defence. On 57 minutes Beaminster broke away on the left wing, and the cross was met by Hussey who slotted the ball past Burton. Russell came close to reducing the deficit 3 minutes later with a free kick that went narrowly wide.

The majority of possession was still with the home side and Burnside with an overhead kick, Dently with a header and Chris Morgan with a snap shot all had chances to keep Borough in the game.

It was Beaminster, however who completed the scoring on 43 minutes, after their forward was brought down by Burton when one on one with the keeper. Burton sustained a head injury, and had to be replaced by Burnside in goal who just failed to get a hand to the resulting penalty from Hussey, who chalked up his hat-trick..

Just before full time a Paul Gatley shot was cleared off the line and Fooks got to the rebound but saw it deflected past the post and at the other end Burnside had to save well to deny the visitors a further goal.

Poole Borough : Dan Burton, Dan Cockwell (Paul Gatley 72), Tony Whitfield (Chris Morgan 60), Winston Buckfield, Ron Denty, Dave Holdroyd, Paul Morrell, James Russell, Scott Smith (Ricky Burnside 49), Alan Fooks, Alex Gunn.
