Scott Smith - 3rd hat-trick of the season
The Stepping Stones Pub |
Poole Borough (4)6, Blandford United Res(0)0 Dorset County League Division 1 11th March 2000 Scorers: Smith 6,27,87; Fooks 32,64; Thompson 43 Borough dominated proceedings against the side bottom of the table and coasted to victory with Scott Smith collecting his 3rd hat-trick of the season. The home side took the lead after 6 minutes, when Ben Thompson's left wing cross was met by Alex Gunn on the far post who knocked the ball goalwards and Smith was on hand in the box to finish. Both Thompson and Dan Cockwell had long range shots which whistled past the post as Borough began passing the ball around well. On 27 minutes a Thompson shot was spilled by the keeper and Smith was on hand to convert the rebound. Smith could have scored again after 31 minutes as he managed to get clear of a crowd of defenders but screwed his shot wide. A minute later Winston Buckfield rode 2 tackles as he advanced into the area and passed to Smith who unselfishly squared the ball to an unmarked Alan Fooks to shoot home. Blandford did create chances but twice when through, their striker was only able to put the ball over the bar. Borough punished them for this as Smith collected the ball on the half-way line and knocked a cross field pass into the path of Thompson on the right who controlled the ball before burying it into the bottom left hand corner of the net HT 4-0 Borough continued the control the game in the second half and Ron Denty was unfortunate when his well timed header from a corner was cleared off the line. Smith created another chance for Fooks after battling into the box but the veteran striker shot over the bar and a Thompson free kick went the same way as it just failed to dip enough after clearing the wall. Chris Morgan was showing some good touches on the left wing, and on 64 minutes got past his defender to executed a perfect cross straight to Fooks who headed the ball home. Morgan created a chance for himself as he got to the byline and advanced on goal, drew the keeper but from an acute angle saw his shot roll just past the far post. With time running out Smith appeared to have missed his hat-trick after a downward header from a Fooks cross went straight to the keeper, but with 3 minutes to go a Thompson cross from the left dropped over the head of the centre back into the path of Smith who made no mistake with his shot.
