Poole Borough (0)1 Dorset County League Division 1 Saturday 30th October Scorer : Alex Gunn 74 In a match played under difficult conditions, affected by a swirling wind and early heavy rain, Borough struggled to control the game and deliver the amount of goal scoring opportunities, normally created. It was Chickerell who created the first chances, and Dan Burton had to save well when they broke through the Poole offside trap. A further opportunity from a corner was headed wide. Ben Thompson again created problems on the left flank and set up an opportunity for Scott Smith on 18 minutes which he drilled just wide of the post. As the rain stopped so Poole picked up the pace, and two opportunities fell to Alan Fooks. The first, a header was scrambled off the line, and the second, a running shot went narrowly wide. Much of the action was in midfield, and Dave Holdroyd in particular played the conditions well, denying the opposition with a number of well timed sliding tackles. The best chance of the half fell to Smith on 38 minutes when a through ball was knocked into his path, but he failed to get it under control and was dispossessed by the last defender. HT 0-0 Borough started the second half a lot stronger, and in the first 10 minutes the midfield quartet of Buckfield, Holdroyd, Phillips and Thompson all had chances to open the scoring. Fooks also had an opportunity on 59 minutes but he just failed to connect to a quickly taken Phillips free kick as it flashed across the 6 yard box. Chickerell were presented with a chance 3 minutes later when their striker picked up a mis-kicked clearance from Burton, but his goal bound shot was deflected for a corner. Alex Gunn came on for the injured Winston Buckfield, and provided additional options up front as Philips moved into the middle of the park. Fooks set up opportunities for both his strike partners. Smith was unable to get enough power into a shot when the ball was laid back to him and Gunn ran on to a pass but saw his low shot saved by the keeper. Borough broke the deadlock after 74 minutes when, from a quick free-kick, Paul Morrell unleashed a pile driving shot that the keeper could only parry. Alex Gunn was on hand to bundle the ball home. The lead, however, lasted for only 3 minutes, before Chickerell executed a swift counter attack and their striker Andy Hall was on hand to collect and convert his chance. Borough pushed for the winner and both Fooks and Smith had chances which were denied by a defender and the keeper respectively. A draw was probably a fair result, Borough had the greater number of chances, but Chickerell defended well and took their opportunity when produced. It was unfortunate, however, that on the adjacent pitch Weymouth United came from behind to beat Moreton 3-1. Poole Borough : Dan Burton, Ross Gulliver, Dan Cockwell, Ron Denty, Paul Morrell, Dave Holdroyd, Ben Thompson (Paul Arnold 85), Winston Buckfield (Alex Gunn 64), Scott Smith, Alan Fooks, James Russell. |
