Poole Borough (0)1, Chickerell United (1)1 Dorset County League Division 1 26th February 2000 Scorer: Thompson 81 Borough lost ground on the leaders following this draw, but it was a fair result and an entertaining encounter, with Chickerell defending well as the home side created the majority of chances but breaking forward swiftly to create opportunities of their own. The early exchanges were even, but it was the visitors who took the lead on 7 minutes when Shane Stone picked up the ball outside the box and rifled a shot past Chris Eastman. Borough came back with chances for Alan Fooks, who forced a save from the Chickerell keeper and Ron Denty, with a header narrowly over from a corner. At the other end Winston Buckfield had to execute a well timed last ditch tackle to prevent a clear strike on goal. Fooks had a further chance to equalise but his header from a corner was cleared off the line. On 25 minutes Chickerell could have gone further in front, but Eastman executed a superb double save, pushing a shot onto the bar, and turning the rebound past the post following a deflection off Paul Morrell. With Borough pushing forward, Chickerell quick forwards looked dangerous on the break, and Eastman again did well to smother the ball with a striker bearing down. Borough had further chances towards the end of the half. Paul Gatley got free on the right wing, and drove a low cross into the area which narrowly eluded Fooks and Ben Thompson saw his free kick scrambled off the line by the keeper with Russell and Holdroyd bearing down. HT 0-1 The second half was dominated by the home side, but goal scoring opportunities were rare as Chickerell defended well and produced some excellent tackles. Morrell and Denty had half chances, but were unable to convert. On 74 minutes Alex Gunn managed to elude his marker on the left wing and crossed into the box, but Fooks just placed his shot the wrong side of the post. Borough used all their substitutes in an attempt to find a way through, and with Thompson switching to the right, more chances were created. On 79 minutes Russell ran on to a Thompson cross in the area, but his shot sailed over the bar. With less than 10 minutes to go, Borough scored the equaliser. From the half-way line, Russell knocked a superb ball into the path of Thompson on the right wing, who took the ball into the area, and buried his shot into the left corner of the net. Both sides pushed for the winner, but Borough had the best chances with Fooks steering a Russell cross just past the post, and Thompson doing the same after once more getting past a now tired Chickerell back line.
