Dorchester United (0)2, Poole Borough (2)6 Dorset League Division 1 Cup Final 13th May 2000 Scorers: Borough capped their first ever season by lifting the Dorset Division 1 Cup with a convincing performance, in front of a crowd of over 200 at Cuthbury. The first 15 minutes
were tight, Borough had the majority of possession but
neither side created a goal scoring opportunity. As the
half wore on, so Borough began to unlock their opponents
defence and Scott Smith, who had earlier been patched up
after a nasty head injury, forced a save from the
Dorchester keeper on 22 minutes with a low skidding shot.
Ron Denty got his head to the resulting corner but the
ball went narrowly A minute later, Paul Morrell received a quick free kick in the area, and crossed to Alex Gunn who just missed the target. Dorchester came back with a couple of half chances, but it was Borough again who should have scored when James Russell headed wide from an Alan Fooks cross. The deadlock was broken by Borough on 33 minutes, when Pete Morrell directed a free kick into the path of Ben Thompson on the left wing, who rifled an unstoppable shot on the half-volley past the keeper. Borough now pushed for a second goal, and Thompson tested the keeper with a looping shot. The talented winger turned provider on 39 minutes, as he teased his marker on the left before crossing into the box where Fooks bravely got his head to the ball under pressure to force it over the line. HT 2-0 The second half was just 2 minutes old when Thompson increased the lead as he received the ball on the left wing and turned his defender twice before cutting into the area and shooting just inside the far post. Borough created further chances whilst centre backs Denty and Paul Morrell were cutting out anything pushed forward by Dorchester. It was no surprise when Smith scored the fourth after 64 minutes with a shot from outside the box after being teed up by Fooks. Dorchester to their credit did not give up and Ahmed Al Kabani beat the offside trap on 67 minutes, coolly taking the ball past Dan Burton before sliding it into the net. Six minutes later Dorchester got their second when full back Gavin Dennis hit a superb shot from outside the box. Now the previously solid Borough defence began to look troubled, and during a five minute spell United created further chances as they saw a way back into the game. Borough, however composed themselves and put the game beyond doubt four minutes from time when, after a battle for the ball outside the Dorchester area, Smith knocked it into the path of Fooks who dispatched his shot with ease. There was still time for Fooks to get his hat-trick just before the final whistle after Gunn ran into the area and unselfishly knocked the ball across to the veteran striker to fire home. Paul Morrell lifted the cup for Borough to start the celebrations for a club that remarkably was not even formed the year previously.
