Dorchester YMCA 2 Poole Borough 3
Dorset County League Division 1
Saturday 25th September

Scorers : Fooks 9; Russell 69 (pen), 72

Borough made hard work of defeating a YMCA side without a win this season as they struggled to convert the many chances created.

It was YMCA who took a shock lead after just 1 minute with a near post header from a corner, and they could have gone further ahead 2 minutes later as Dan Burton did well to tip over a free kick.

Borough soon began to take control and a Lee Atkins dipping shot had to be turned over the bar by the keeper. On 9 minutes Poole were level as Scott Smith jinked into the box but saw his well struck shot rebound off the post into the path of Alan Fooks who blasted the ball into the net.

Ron Denty twice came close to increasing the lead on 16 minutes as a diving header was deflected on its way towards goal, and his shot from the resulting corner went narrowly wide.

Poole dominated the remainder of the half, and created enough chances to kill the game off. Fooks’s intelligent running enabled him to get behind the defence a number of times, but his finishing touches either cannoned off the keeper or failed to hit the target. On 34 minutes he appeared to be tripped attempting to go around the keeper, but the penalty appeal was turned down.

Just before the end of the half Winston Buckfield somehow managed to carve an opening for himself in a packed 18 yard box, but his shot came off the bar and Fooks could only put the rebound the wrong side of the post.

HT - 1-1

The first 20 minutes of the second half saw constant Poole pressure, but they were unable to convert that into goals. They were punished for this on 67 minutes when their failure to clear a rare Dorchester attack allowed the opposition striker to pick up to a through ball and run on to score.

That lead didn’t last long as Borough were awarded a penalty on 69 minutes when Fooks was knocked off the ball running away from goal to pick up a Smith cross. James Russell successfully dispatched the spot kick.

Three minutes later Borough took the lead for the first time. Russell played a 1-2 with Smith and the return pass into the box was deftly placed past the approaching keeper and just inside the post.

Borough continued to create chances to seal victory but YMCA were still dangerous on the break, and only a brave interception from Jimmy Rushen in front of goal on 81 minutes prevented a clear scoring chance, but resulted in him playing no further part in the game.

Fooks carved out two further chances as the Referee played 8 minutes of injury time, but with Dorchester also pushing forward, the final whistle was as welcome as the 3 points.
