Poole Borough (3)7,
Dorchester YMCA (0)0 Dorset County League Division 1 22nd January 2000 Scorers : Fooks 2; 50, Smith 24; Thompson 37, 67; Gunn 64, 86. An emphatic victory for Borough, all the more satisfying with the inclusion of a clean sheet for Dan Burton. The first goal came after only 2 minutes, when Scott Smith sent in a cross from the right by line and Alan Fooks nipped in on the near post to steer the ball past the keeper. Borough continued to push forward and Ben Thompson, Jamie Russell and Fooks all put the ball over the bar when through against the keeper. At the other end YMCA were penetrating the Borough defence but were unable to get a shot on target. On 24 minutes a YMCA goal kick was headed back by Ron Denty into the path of Smith, who ran past a defender and slotted the ball past the keeper and just inside the post for Borough's 2nd. Further Borough pressure was rewarded on 37 minutes, when Russell sent in a low right wing cross, Smith on the near post stepped over the ball and Thompson was on hand in the middle of the 6 yard box to hammer the ball home. HT 3-0 The second half was dominated by Borough and Fooks increased the lead 5 minutes after the restart , when a Smith shot cannoned of a defender and he blasted home the rebound. Alex Gunn scored the fifth on 64 minutes with a well struck shot, which the keeper could only parry, and the momentum took the ball over the line. Three minutes later a right wing cross into the box eluded Denty but dropped to Thompson to tap the ball into the net. Chances continued to be created and Gunn was only able to shoot wide after collecting a Fooks cross off balance in the area. Mike Satterley also was unfortunate when a Russell cross went just behind him and was unable to recover quickly enough to get a clear shot on target. The elusive 7th goal came 4 minutes before the end when Russell put in another excellent right wing cross and Gunn was on hand on the area to convert. The YMCA keeper was fortunate to save with his legs from both Satterley and Russell in the last 3 minutes, but Borough had still delivered their highest scoring league victory.
