Poole Borough (4)6,
Gillingham Town Reserves (0)2 Dorset County League Division 1 15th January 2000 Scorers : Alan Fooks 5, 24, 48, 58; Russell 37; Denty 42 Borough got back to winning ways, dominating the match against 7th placed Gillingham, in a game which was effectively all over by half-time. With Ben Tompson returning on the left wing, Borough created chances from the kick off, and it was no surprise they tok the lead after 5 minutes, as an attack was cleared only as far as Alan Fooks, on the edge of the box, who cooley placed his shot into the back of the net. Three minutes later Fooks nearly scored his second when he received a short corner on the right wing and his dipping shot rebounded off the bar. On 24 minutes, a Gillingham forward got through the Borough defence for the first time, and Dan Burton did well to collect the ball at the strikers feet. Burton dispatched a long kick forward which Fooks collected unmarked, and took the ball round the keeper before slotting it home. Borough continued to pressure and Thompson should have done better after 35 minutes when he got clear of his defender, but put his shot over the bar. Two minutes later Fooks was fouled in the middle of the opponenents half and Jamie Russell struck a superb dipping free kick, which the keeper couldn't get close to as it flew into the net. Another free kick from Russell on 42 minutes, this time on the right, was drilled in low and Ron Denty was on hand inside the 6 yard box to steer the ball over the line. HT 4-0 Borough scored their fifth goal after 48 minutes, when a wayward shot went towards a group of players in the area and Fooks was first to react, firing the ball past the keeper. Gillingham reduced the arears on 57 minutes when, Burton was unable to get down quickly enough to a soft shot along the ground and it trickled over the line. Straight from the re-start Alex Gunn collected the ball on the right wing and crossed for Fooks to place a shot high into the net. All three substitutes came on for Borough, and they began to loose their shape. After 72 minutes Gillingham took advantage to score their second. Burton did well to save a close range shot, but the ball fell to a striker lying on the floor, who had time to stand and direct it into the goal. Chances fell late in the game for Fooks, Russell and Gunn to restore the five goal advantage but Borough had already done enough to secure the first three points of 2000.
