Scott Smith - Scored 6 goals in 3 games since his return from injury |
Moreton (0)1, Poole Borough (2)7 Dorset County League Division 1 18th March 2000 Scorers: Smith 13, 88; Fooks 31; Holdroyd 49; Russell 72; Gunn 85; Thompson 87 Borough won by six goals for the second week running, although the margin would have been far greater if more of the many chances created had been converted. Indeed there was a spell in the second half when Moreton pulled a goal back and looked as though they might cut Boroughs lead to a single goal but three goals in the last five minutes made the score more realistic. Borough started strongly and both Thompson and Morgan made strong runs down the left, however in the 11th minute Dan Burton was the first keeper in action as he was called upon to make a flying save from a shot outside the area. This woke Borough up and two minutes later James Russell hit a low cross to the near post which was mishandled by the Moreton keeper and Smith was on hand to poke the ball home. The visitors had another half dozen good chances to increase their lead but their shots were often off-target, although the strong wind was proving a problem. The second goal finally came on 31 minutes after Thompson and Smith combined to set up Fooks for a simple tap-in. Further chances were missed and at half-time, although Borough looked comfortable with a two goal lead it should really have been six or seven. HT 0-2 The lead was increased after only four minutes of the second-half when Thompson cut inside and delivered a right foot cross to the far post which was headed back across the goal for Holdroyd to head in from close range. A minute later Holdroyd thought he had scored again when another Thompson cross was dropped by the keeper and he bundled the ball in, but the referee ruled their had been an infringement. Moreton fought back but Dan Burton made a good one-handed save to his right when an attacker was put clear. This seemed to encourage the home team and they used the long ball to good effect to put pressure on the Borough defence. They eventually pulled a goal back on 71 minutes when a through ball found a Moreton forward clear and this time Burton was given no chance. Borough were stung back into action and a minute later Russell unleashed a tremendous shot from 25 yards that flew past the keeper before he had a chance to react. With the game now seemingly won Borough brought on Burnside and Gatley for Morrell and Fooks. Dan Cockwell went close to scoring his first goal for Borough but the keeper parried away his shot. In the last five minutes, Borough ran riot to add three more goals. A Morgan free-kick was headed on by Smith for Gunn to score, and then Thompson beat two men and chipped the keeper from long range. Two minutes from time a fine cross field ball by Burnside found Gatley whose vicious shot was parried by the keeper. In the ensuing scramble the ball was twice cleared off the line but eventually finished in the net, Smith being the last Borough player touch the ball.
