Poole Borough 6, Moreton 0

Dorset County League Division 1
Saturday 9th October

Scorers : Denty 3, 29, 67; Russell 45; Smith 45; Thompson 89.

Further affected by injuries, Borough fielded debutante Ross Gulliver and 16 year old Dan Cockwell made his first start after two impressive displays as substitute.

Borough started the game in sparkling form with chances for Ben Thompson and Scott Smith before Ron Denty scored with a low shot from a corner after just 3 minutes.

James Russell caused the Moreton defence problems with his angled left wing crosses and both Smith and Denty just failed to convert the resulting chances.

Thompson was also creating chances on the right wing and on 17 minutes he cut in past 2 players but saw his shot cannon off a defenders legs.

The Poole pressure was unrelenting and both Denty and Alan Whitfield were able to push forward and create chances before Denty rose unchallenged to head in a Russell corner on 29 minutes.

Moreton were defending in numbers but were struggling to cope with Borough's quick movement from midfield. Any attempts by Moreton to push forward were stifled by the Poole defence where Dan Cockwell looked assured in the tackle and provided accurate distribution.

The dominance was such that Moreton only managed to fashion their first real chance after 43 minutes but a good cross was deflected away from goal by their own forward.

The referee played 4 minutes of first half injury time and Borough took full advantage. A Winston Buckfield pass was met by Russell on the right wing, who cut inside and was able to run parallel with the 6 yard line, taking the ball past the keeper before shooting home.

Alan Fooks then picked up a ball pumped forward by Cockwell and ran it into the path of Scott Smith who cut inside a defender before shooting into the bottom left corner.

HT - 4-0

It was not surprising that Borough could not continue the tempo into the second half but they were still causing problems when they got the ball to Russell and Thompson on the wings.

Russell had two chances to increase the lead, firstly he was unable to connect cleanly following a Dave Holdroyd knock down and then a good running shot was pushed past the post by the keeper.

On 67 minutes Fooks picked up a short corner and whipped it across the box, where Denty was ready to not in a the far post to give the defender his hat-trick.

Three minutes later, Smith saw a shot touched onto the post by the keeper and cleared by a defender following good work by Thompson.

With the game won, Poole gave substitutes John Bancroft, Ryan Malone and Matthew Burton a run out.

With time running out, Poole were awarded a free-kick outside the box for hand ball, and Thompson stepped up to deftly curl the ball into the net.

Poole Borough : Dan Burton, Dan Cockwell, Alan Whitfield, Ben Thompson, Ron Denty, David Holdroyd (John Bancroft 75), Ross Gulliver, Winston Buckfield, Scott Smith, Alan Fooks (Ryan Malone 80), James Russell (Matthew Burton 82).
