Portland Utd Reserves (0)0, Poole Borough (1)6
Dorset County League Division 1
Saturday 20th November

Scorers : Fooks 21; Holdroyd 49,75; Russell 55; Smith 77,83

A bone-chilling, blustery wind at Portland’s impressive stadium proved uncomfortable for players and spectators alike. Borough took time to settle. Portland’s young side adapted better to the conditions and with better finishing could have taken an early lead. When Borough did threaten they found the opposing keeper in fine form.

Alan Fooks took a kick in the head and required lengthy treatment, but he recovered sufficiently to score the first goal on 21 minutes. Scott Smith did well on the right and with his back to goal flicked the ball over his own head and a defender’s to find Fooks who, also with his back to goal, did the same to catch the keeper unaware with his overhead kick.

The rest of the half saw the Portland keeper make several outstanding saves, one notably from a Russell volley on 45 minutes, whilst at the other end Dan Burton was kept busy as Portland pressed for an equaliser.

HT 0-1

Borough pressed strongly at the start of the second-half and a Satterley cross was caught under the bar by the keeper. Shortly afterwards Scott Smith , who was very lively up front, beat his man and put the ball into the box where David Holdroyd was on hand to thump the ball home and score his first goal for the Borough.

On 55 minutes Borough killed the game off when Fooks set up James Russell to score with a low shot which crept inside the post. Fooks was unlucky later to hit the bar with a quickly taken free-kick.

Portland were still playing football but were unable to make any impression as Borough took control of the game. Portland substituted their keeper and he had not been on the field long when Whitfield , breaking forward down the left, found Fooks who crossed for Holdroyd to head his second goal.

Two minutes later Fooks was again the provider, this time crossing from the right for Smith to slide in at the near post. Dan Cockwell almost scored his first goal when he cut in from the right but his shot was parried away by the keeper for a corner. The last goal came when a high ball into the box was dropped and Smith was on hand to force the ball home.

At the final whistle everyone was glad to retire to the warmth of the clubhouse. Another three points and a good result for our goal difference. This Portland side, although well beaten today, could surprise a few teams here at the New Grove Corner.
