Poole Borough (7)11, Portland United Reserves (0)0 Dorset County League Division 1 19th February 2000 Scorers: Thompson 10,41,52; Gunn 17,26,45; Russell 32,77; Holdroyd 36; Fooks 69,73. Borough bounced back after their below par performance last week with an emphatic victory. Chris Eastman made his debut in goal replacing an injured Dan Burton and Paul Gatley also started for the first time. The initial exchanges saw both sides creating openings, the best chance falling to Alex Gunn whose shot went just wide. On 10 minutes Paul Morrell sent a superb curling cross into the box, and Ben Thompson met the ball on the half-volley to knock it past the keeper. Seven minutes later, James Russell slid a ball behind the Portland defence and Alex Gunn ran on to it, taking the ball past the keeper and walking it over the line. Borough we now stringing passes together well and Russell, Alan Fooks and Ron Denty all had chances before Gunn latched on to a Morrell defensive clearance and coolly slotted the ball home. The fourth goal came on 32 minutes when Russell ran at goal, taking the ball past 2 players and providing himself with enough space to blast an unstoppable shot into the net. Poole were now dominating and 2 minutes later Morrell knocked a ball into the path of Fooks in the area, who unselfishly passed across goal to Dave Holdroyd to score. It took Portland 40 minutes to test Eastman in goal, and he did well to save a shot low to his left. The ball was quickly returned back up field, and Portland could only clear to Thompson just outside the area, who struck a shot sweetly past the keeper. Gunn completed his hat-trick just before half time when he managed to bundle a Gatley right wing cross over the line. HT 7-0 Borough continued their attacking stance at the start of the second half and Fooks had a couple of chances to get off the mark before Thompson scored his third with a superb dribble past 3 defenders into the area, where he dispatched a measured shot past the keeper and inside his near post. Portland's keeper saved twice more from Fooks, who must have thought is wasn't to be his day. His luck changed, however, after 69 minutes when he ran on to an inch perfect pass from Russell and lifted the ball over the advancing keeper and into the net. Fooks got his 2nd and Borough's 10th after good work by Gunn sent Chris Morgan on a left wing run, and his cross was slammed home by the veteran forward. The final goal for Borough came on 77 minutes with another superb strike by Russell from 20 yards out which flew just inside the post. Further chances were created for Gunn and Fooks, but the final whistle could only be a relief for the visitors who were on the wrong end of Borough's record victory.
