Stourpaine (0)1, Poole Borough (0)0
Dorset County League Division 1
8th January 2000

Borough deserved at least a point in the Division's Match of the Day, but failure to convert the chances created against a well marshalled Stourpaine defence lead to only the third defeat of the season, and a gap opening up between ourselves and the top two.

Poole started brightly and Paul Morrell forced a good save from the keeper with a shot outside the box after 2 minutes. A rare slip from Dan Cockwell let in the Stourpaine winger at the other end, but his shot hit the side netting.

The game was tight, with both sides battling for control of midfield. Borough were struggling to string together enough passes to break through Stourpaine's defence, whilst the home side utilised the long ball forward, but Dan Burton dealt easily which anything that came over his defenders heads.

As the half wore on, so Borough began to create chances. Scott Smith was sent on a run on the left wing by Jamie Russell, but his cross to an unmarked Mike Satterley was intercepted by the keeper.

On 36 minutes Smith teed up Dave Holdsworth outside the box, but his low shot was deflected past the post by a defender. The resulting corner from Russell swung in towards the far post, and had to be scrambled clear by a defender.

HT 0-0

The second half was more open with Stourpaine producing the early chances and on 60 minutes Ron Denty did well under pressure to head a right wing cross out for a corner.

Borough began to create chances in the Stourpaine area, and Denty just failed to get his head onto a Morrell free kick. Two minutes later Russell jinked past three defenders and knocked the ball into the box, but Alan Fooks was only able to shoot wide.

On 69 minutes Fooks got to the by-line and sent in cross to Smith, but his shot was somehow cleared off the line. The ball went straight down the other end where Dan Burton advanced to the edge of his area to narrow the angle and save the strikers shot with his legs.

Borough again had the chance to score 3 minutes later when Cockwell sent in a low cross to the near post, Smith challenged the keeper for the ball, which fell to Mike Satterley inside the 6 yard box, but he was unable to get in a clear shot at goal.

Stourpaine took the lead after 76 minutes when a dipping long range shot went over Burton, hit the crossbar and rebounded off the luckless keeper and into the net.

From that point on Borough pushed forward looking for an equaliser, leaving gaps at the back. Burton did well to keep the score down a number of times as Stourpaine broke through.

With 10 minutes to go the Stourpaine keeper did well to push the ball past the post, when a Smith lob appeared to be going in. Four minutes later a Denty header was cleared off the line, and Borough knew is wasn't going to be their day.
