Trinidad Greens Bedding 0 Poole Borough 5
Dorset Seinor Cup 1st Round
Saturday 2nd October

Scorers : Own Goal 49; Denty 51; Burton 71; Fooks 72, 89.

Borough overcame a spirited Trinidad side in a game dominated by a blustery wind to take their place in the 2nd round of the Senior Cup.

The first 20 minutes of the game was even. Trinidad had a good chance to go ahead when they broke through Borough's back line but Dan Burton did well to parry the shot.

Poole were struggling to string their passes together as Trinidad battled for every ball in midfield. Winston Buckfield created a chance for himself on 24 minutes when he battled through to the 18 yard box and saw his shot strike the post. John Bancroft was on hand, but failed to convert the rebound.

Borough began to pressure more and Ryan Malone narrowly volleyed over from a Alan Fooks pass on 30 minutes and 4 minutes later put another chance just over the bar.

Fooks headed the ball into the net on 35 minutes, but the referee disallowed it possibly for pushing.

Ben Thompson was playing deeper as left wing back, but managed to get forward and dribble past 3 players, but his shot lacked power and was easily saved by the keeper.

Trinidad had their own chances and should have done better on 40 minutes when Dan Burton made a rare mistake, placing his return from a back pass straight into the path of their striker, who could only finish with a weak shot directly at the keeper.

HT - 0-0

The second half was a different story, but it took a stroke of luck to set Borough on their way 4 minutes after the restart. Russell floated a free-kick into the box, which deflected off a defenders head and into the back of the net.

Two minutes later and the lead was increased as Ron Denty rose unchallenged to head in a Russell corner.

Borough now attacked in confidence. Thompson whipped over a cross which Scott Smith volleyed narrowly past the post, and Denty almost scored with a carbon copy of his first, but this time headed wide.

The game was not all one way, and Dan Burton needed two attempts to collect a dangerous cross.

Matthew Burton came on for Malone on 69 minutes and needed just 2 minutes before making his mark on the game when he increased the lead with a brave far post headed from a Fooks cross.

Burton returned the favour just a minute later as he pumped a high ball forward which Fooks, brought down, flicked over his head, and dispatched expertly with a volley into the top corner.

Trinidad continued to push forward and should have had a consolation goal on 79 minutes when a goal bound shot struck a Poole player and spooned over the bar.

Following further chances for Fooks and Smith, the two combined on 89 minutes when Smith unselfishly set Fooks clear and he stroked the ball past the keeper and in the bottom corner of the net.

For Poole, 16 year old Dan Cockwell, who came on as a first half substitute, put in an impressive performance and has shown himself to be a very good prospect.

Poole Borough : Dan Burton, Lee Atkins (Dan Cockwell 19), Ben Thompson, John Bancroft, Ron Denty, David Holdroyd (Dave Graham 83), James Russell, Winston Buckfield, Scott Smith, Alan Fooks, Ryan Malone (Matthew Burton 69).
