Poole Borough (2)4, Weymouth United (0)0
Dorset County League Division 1
Saturday 13th November

Scorers : Ben Thompson 4; Alan Fooks 34, 54; Scott Smith 74.

Borough delivered an emphatic victory against the league leaders and kept the club in the title hunt, on a day when 2nd placed Stourpaine also lost.

Poole attacked from the start and were rewarded after only 4 minutes when Dave Holroyd headed the ball into the path of Ben Thompson, running in from the left, who coolly slotted the ball into the net.

The lead could have been increased twice during the next few minutes. First Ron Denty knocked the ball to Scott Smith who fired wide, and then Denty himself headed just the wrong side of the post from a James Russell cross.

On 15 minutes, Borough looked certain to score again when a Paul Morrell long throw into the box, resulted in Smith, Thompson and Holdroyd all attempting to hit the target, but finding the ball coming back off a sea of defenders legs.

Weymouth had their chances to equalise. On 20 minutes they were awarded a free kick 25 yards out in front of goal, which Dan Burton did well to save low to his right. 2 minutes later they should have done better with a header from a corner which went over the bar.

Alex Gunn twisted his knee on 32 minutes and had to be replaced by Mike Satterley. It was Satterley who set up Borough's 2nd goal 2 minutes later when his cross from the right deflected off a defenders head, and Alan Fooks was on hand and unmarked at the far post to head in.

Fooks, Smith and Thompson produced further opportunities, but as the half came to an end, so the visitors pushed forward in an attempt to reduce the deficit, and the Poole defence did well to maintain the advantage

HT 2-0

Weymouth found themselves under pressure again straight after the restart, as Satterley just failed to connect to a Morrell left wing cross.

On 54 minutes Borough cemented their lead as Holdroyd, who was battling well in midfield, won the ball and passed to Satterley on the right. He knocked it inside to Fooks clear in the box to place it past the keeper.

Weymouth continued to attack, and hit the bar after 62 minutes. At the other end Borough thought they had a penalty when Fookes was tripped in the box, but the referee saw it as obstruction and the resulting free kick went wide.

Further chances fell to Fooks and Smith before on 73 minutes the Weymouth keeper could only clear the ball straight to Smith who went outside one defender and scored from the narrowest of angles.

While Borough continued to push forward to further increase the score, Weymouth had 2 chances to get a consolation goal and Burton earned his clean sheet with fine saves from a free kick and when one against one with their striker.
