Poole Borough (2)3, Weymouth Sports (0)1 Dorset League Division 1 Cup Semi Final 6th May 2000 Scorers: Smith 23, 33, 87. Borough booked their pace in the final of the Dorset Division 1 Cup final next week, but not without a nail biting finish against a Weymouth side who finished just below them, in third place in the league. The first 20 minutes, saw both sides creating opportunities without a clear goal scoring chance. The game ignited after 23 minutes as first Borough survived a goal mouth scramble, with Alex Gunn on hand to block a Weymouth shot, and the resultant long clearance from defence was picked up by Scott Smith in the Weymouth area who coolly fired the ball past the visitors keeper. Pete Morrell was close to increasing the lead when his free kick was saved low down, but at the other end, Winston Buckfield had to execute a superbly timed tackle to prevent a goal scoring opportunity. On 33 minutes Borough increased their lead as Smith stole into the box to execute a glancing header to convert a Ben Thompson free kick. HT 2-0 Borough started the second period with a flourish and could have increased their lead within a minute when Thompson crossed from the edge of the area, and Smith met the ball with a volley which cannoned of the bar. Alan Fooks had three opportunities to put the game beyond Weymouth, but all were off target, and Borough were punished when Weymouth pulled a goal back on 58 minutes with a well struck free kick. Weymouth now pushed forward for the equaliser, which provided space for Borough and Jamie Russell had a long range shot tipped over the bar. The visitors created chances to equalise but the Borough defence defend in depth, Buckfield and Paul Morrell especially strong in the middle. The closest opportunity for Weymouth came on 80 minutes when their striker broke clear and lobbed the ball over the advancing Burton, but saw it bounce narrowly wide. Borough sealed victory with 2 minutes to go, when the ball was cleared out from defence to Fooks on the left wing, who took it past the keeper and squared to Smith to tap in for his hat-trick.
