Weymouth FC (0)1, Poole Borough (1)1
Dorset Senior Cup 3rd Round
7th December 1999

Scorers : Fooks 44
Attendance : 211

Borough came very close to pulling off the biggest ever upset in the history of the Dorset Senior Cup when they held a near full-strength Weymouth side to a draw at the Wessex Stadium. Playing the first-half against a strong wind Poole survived a 4th minute penalty appeal and a minute later Dan Burton spread himself well to deny a Weymouth forward.

After that initial scare Borough matched their opponents, and the standard of their play, passing and movement belied their County League status. Weymouth came closest to scoring first when a Simon Browne free-kick struck the bar in the 21st minute but five minutes later it was Borough’s turn to hit the woodwork. Alan Fooks burst through and hit a tremendous shot from an acute angle that Dan Claxton tipped away onto the bar.

Chances were made at both ends but to the delight of their supporters Borough took the lead just on half-time. The 41 year old ALAN FOOKS took his chance well to blast the ball past Claxton from 18 yards.

HT 0-1

Weymouth were back in it within five minutes of the second-half start when David Laws turned in the box and rifled the ball past Dan Burton, who managed to get a hand to the ball but the pace was too much for him. Minutes later an Alex Browne header was cleared off the line by Mike Satterley.

Borough battled back and Russell and Thompson both caused the Weymouth defence problems. One good run from Thompson finished with a cross that Scott Smith hit first time but the ball went just the wrong side of the post.

Although Weymouth had more possession, as the game drew to a close Borough looked the more likely to snatch a result. In the last five minutes Paul Morrell got forward to curl a shot wide and then a succession of free-kicks caused problems for the Weymouth defence.

It would be unfair to name a Borough man of the match, as they all were heroes on the night.
