Poole Borough again did themselves and the Dorset County League much credit as they bowed out of the Senior Cup with another battling display against Weymouth.

From the kick off Borough pushed forward, forcing the first corner after only 2 minutes. After 7 minutes Poole were in the lead, as Scott Smith stole the ball off Waldock on the by-line and crossed for Alan Fooks to hammer the ball home from just outside the 6 yard box.

Weymouth had two chances to equalise after 17 minutes but both shots went wide of the post. At the other end good battling from Dave Holdroyd saw him come away with the ball and send Fooks on a run on the left wing, but both Smith and James Russell were unable to connect cleanly with his cross, and the ball was scrambled away.

The Borough defence were coping well with Weymouth's attacks and anything that got past the back four was dealt with easily by Dan Burton.

On 32 minutes Borough should have had a penalty as Russell was blatantly hauled down in the area when one on one with the keeper. Referee Lillington could only have been looking elsewhere at the time, and he waved play-on, much to the amazement of the majority of the crowd.

Weymouth equalised on 43 minutes with a fluke of a goal. Dan Burton save superbly from a Hutchinson cross but the ball was picked up by Robinson near the by-line and his resulting cross dipped wickedly after going over Burton's head, and dropped into the back of the net.

Borough had another chance just before the break, as Fooks and Smith played a neat 1-2 outside the box, but Fooks resulting shot flew over the bar.

HT 1-1

The second half was dominated by Weymouth, as a combination of strong wind and driving rain against them plus the lack of a game in four weeks took its toll on the Borough players.

It was Poole who had the initial chance, however, as Paul Morrell floated a free kick into the box, both Alex Gunn and Ron Denty had shots blocked by defenders before the keeper smothered the ball.

For the first time in the tie, Weymouth took the lead on 58 minutes, as a left wing cross found Laws unmarked, and he hammered the ball home.

On 72 minutes Weymouth increased their lead. Morrell executed an excellent tackle in the box, but as the ball fell to Adcock he flicked it up before volleying it into the back of the net.

Borough's defence resolutely held firm to keep the score down and Dan Burton played his part with a string of magnificent saves.

At the other end Borough nearly pulled a goal back with 5 minutes to go as Russell picked up a poor clearance from the keeper, but his lob towards goal held up in the wind and was intercepted by a back tracking defender.

It is to our players credit, that if Weymouth go on to lift the Senior Cup, it is almost certain that they will not receive a tougher test than the one Poole Borough gave them over the last 2 matches.
