Dorset County League Division 1
9th September 2000

Scorers : Coles 2; Alex Gunn (pen) 10; Alan Fooks 35,43; Smith 60.
Borough Man of The Match : Chris Morgan

Again Borough were without key players for this game between two sides who had yet to drop points this season. Strong defender Shaun Hebdon was at a wedding and midfielder Dave Holdroyd was injured. However they welcomed back Andy Coles and striker Scott Smith and also signed on former Dorchester Town defender Tony White, who played for Newport IOW last season.

Badger Sports keeper Chris Eastman, who made four appearances for Borough last season, was soon in action and after only 2 minutes a well-flighted free kick from Thomas was met by Coles who scored with a fine header. On 10 minutes Morgan ran through the defence and was brought down in the area. Alex Gunn stepped up and made no mistake with the penalty kick.

White and Morrell were mopping up any Badger attacks and Borough had several chances to increase their advantage. Coles had a shot saved and then headed over from the resulting corner, Fooks went close with an overhead kick and Badger survived a strong penalty appeal when Morgan was again chopped down.

Badger had their first serious attempt on goal after 35 minutes when Morrell was robbed, but Andy Gunn held the shot at the second attempt. Fooks scored twice before the break and both goals were set up by the hard-working Alex Gunn. Both times Gunn crossed from the right, the first was met by a strong header and the second was a vicious shot. Eastman in the Badger goal had no chance with either.

HT 4-0

As last week the second half was not as exciting as the first. Credit to Badger who worked hard to close down but Borough missed a series of chances and could have scored another four in the half. The only goal came on the hour. A long ball down the left by White was picked up by Fooks near the line and although closely marked he hit an overhead kick into the box, where Smith nipped between the defender and keeper to score from a narrow angle.

Borough took the opportunity to bring on Gulliver and Glenister but it was Andy Gunn who was in action as the game drew to a close as he got down to save well from a low shot to earn his second clean sheet in two weeks.

Poole Borough : Andy Gunn, Dan Cockwell (Paul Glenister 80), Dan Herrington (Ross Gulliver 75), Pete Morrell, Tony White, Andy Coles, Alex Gunn, Mark Thomas, Scott Smith, Alan Fooks, Chris Morgan.  Unused Sub. Paul Arnold.
