Pete Morrell - A colossus in defence and probably the goal of the season |
Chickerell United (0) 0, Poole Borough (1) 3. Dorset County League Division 1 13th January 2001 Scorers : Alan Fooks 18,
Pete Morrell 65, Alex Gunn 80. Borough overcame both difficult opposition and a heavily sloping pitch to run out 3-0 winners away to Chickerell United. Borough kicked off the first half playing up-hill and although having the majority of the early exchanges, with both Alan Fooks and Scott Smith going close, it took a superbly timed tackle from Pete Morrell on 15 minutes to deny a Chickerell forward when he appeared to have only keeper Andy Gunn to beat. Three minutes later it was Borough who took the lead with a bizarre goal after the home keeper attempted to head clear a back pass, but the ball bounced over his head an Alan Fooks was on hand to tap in. The Borough midfield fought well to deny Chickerell the opportunity to benefit from the slope, but on 31 minutes it took a superb save at full stretch by Andy Gunn from a free kick to keep Borough on top. HT 0-1 The second period started with chances at both ends, Alex Gunn just failing to latch onto a driven cross for Borough and at the other end Morrell making another crucial tackle just outside the box. It was Pete Morrell who got the all important second goal, after a Borough attack was broken down he picked up the ball in the centre circle and blasted a shot which flew like a bullet under the crossbar, evading a desperate dive from the keeper. Borough sealed their victory with a well worked goal 10 minutes from time, Scott Smith collecting a pass and running diagonally at the home defence before knocking the ball into the path of Alex Gunn who skipped past the keeper before walking the ball home. Borough : Andy Gunn, Dan Cockwell (Ross Gulliver 85), Tony White, Pete Morrell, Sean Hebdon, Andy Coles, Alex Gunn (Gary Fooks 80), Dan Herrington, Scott Smith, Alan Fooks, Chris Morgan (Dave Holdroyd 68). |
