Pete Morell - Opened the scoring |
Poole Borough (3)3, Dorchester YMCA (0)0 Dorset County League Division 1 14th October 2000 Scorers : Pete Morrell 30, Chris Morgan 31, Scott
Smith 43. Borough will remember this game as one where they played some superb football but, despite dominating the second period, had to settle for 3 goals scored in the first half to seal the victory. The Dorchester defence was under pressure from the kick-off and Scott Smith had a shot touched past the post by the keeper after only 2 minutes. Alan Fooks also had a shot saved, and Alex Gunn went close with a superb volley following a deep cross from the left by Tony White. It took 30 minutes for Borough to take the lead, and the goal came from a Pete Morrell free kick which the keeper could only parry on its way into the net. A minute later, Borough scored their second as Chris Morgan latched onto a through ball and made space for himself before placing a low shot just inside the right hand post. Alan Fooks created two further chances before Tony White delivered an inch perfect cross into the box where Scott Smith stole between two defenders to head home. HT 3-0 Borough provided the crowd with a superb display of passing football in the second period, but incredibly were unable to increase the score as Dorchester defended bravely with their keeper somehow managing keep the ball out, although he was also saved by the woodwork three times. After 4 minutes of the restart an Alex Gunn cross came off the bar, and 3 minutes later an Alan Fooks shot came off both post and bar. Scott Smith had three headers saved in as many minutes and Pete Morrell also saw the keeper block a long range shot, with the rebound flying just over the bar from Gary Fooks. Alan Fooks, looking to break his 4 game drought, just could not get the ball into the net and was again denyed by the post following a thundering shot from the edge of the area and by the keeper from a close range header.
