(0)1, Poole Borough (1)3 Dorset County League Division 1 23rd August 2000 Scorers : Holdroyd 39;
Buckfield 49; Smith 66 The first 20 minutes was a scrappy affair, with neither team able deliver a convincing goal scoring opportunity before Scott Smith saw his deft flick from a Dave Holdroyd header kicked off the line. Flights had a chance to take the lead, but Andy Gunn did well to save low to his left, and Smith put a couple of chances narrowly wide for Borough before Andy Coles had a shot tipped over the bar. Borough began to pressure more, but we unable to finish off their opportunities before, on 39 minutes, Alex Gunn battled for the ball on the right wing, before putting over a deep cross which the keeper failed to cut out, and Holdroyd was on hand to head into an empty net. HT 0-1 Just one minute after the restart Flights came close to drawing level, but with their striker clear of the defence, Andy Gunn was equal to his shot, and turned the ball past the post. After that let off, it was Borough who took the initiative, and 3 minutes later increased their lead when Alan Fooks received a short corner and crossed into the area, for Winston Buckfield to rise above two defenders and head home. Smith had another shot well saved, but Flights too had a good chance when Shaun Hebdon failed to cut out a cross field pass, leaving the forward with a clear run on goal, but his resulting shot brought out another fine save from Andy Gunn as he pushed the ball into the post. Hebdon was again in the thick of things on 61 minutes as he was adjudged by Premiership official Wendy Toms to have fouled in the area, and the resulting penalty put Flights back in the game. Another penalty was awarded just 3 minutes later, this time for Borough as Gary Fooks was tripped as he went for the by line, but Alex Gunn placed the spot kick the wrong side of the post. However Borough continued to press and after putting a header over the bar a minute earlier, Smith was on hand in the area to latch onto a through ball and steer his shot into the right hand corner. Borough created further chances, the closest a Smith header deflected past the post by the keeper, but cruised to victory without managing to take advantage of their superior possession during the last 20 minutes of the game.
