Smith 14, 87; Alan Fooks 32, 54; Tony Diaz 70, 85; Pete
Morrell 76. Borough went 10 points clear at the top of the table, after overcoming a Flights side, with 6 first team players, who looked dangerous for long periods and were in contention for 65 minutes of the game. After an even first 10 minutes, Flights took the lead on 13 minutes when a speculative long range shot from Ayres beat keeper Andy Gunn. Borough came straight back a minute later when the visitors keeper could only punch a corner into the air and Scott Smith was on the line to bundle the ball over. As the half wore on, Flights sustained the majority of the pressure, but continued to brake quickly from defence, forcing Gunn to make one smart save and also put further scoring attempts narrowly wide. It was Borough, however who made the breakthrough, after a pass sent Chris Morgan on a run down the left, and he slipped the ball inside to Alan Fooks who steered it past the keeper. Both sides created further chances before the interval, the best falling to Fooks, who latched onto a through ball, but his shot went narrowly wide. HT 2-1 The second period started with Andy Gunn being forced to make a smart save from a Flights forward and both Morgan and Scott Smith putting shots over the bar. Flights continued to look dangerous on the break and equalised on 52 minutes after Stephens stole through the defence to head a right wing cross over the advancing Gunn. Borough pushed forward in numbers and after Pete Morrell battled in the area to force the ball home, his deflected shot fell to Fooks, who from a narrow angle lifted the ball into the net. Flights brave resistance ended on 65 minutes when Tony Diaz latched onto a superb through ball from Tony White and placed his shot just inside the near post. The home side now dominated and Pete Morrell added to the total with a well struck a free kick, after Scott Smith was upended on the edge of the area, and Alex Gunn was unfortunate not to score when the keeper save successive shots with his feet. Diaz scored his second with 5 minutes remaining, taping in a low cross from Scott Smith after the striker had broken the offside trap, and Smith himself scored again just before time after latching on to a short back pass and knocking the ball past the keeper. Borough : Andy Gunn, Sean Hebdon, Tony White, Pete Morrell, Tommy Heffernan, Scott Smith, Alex Gunn (Matt Smith 84), Dan Herrington, Tony Diaz, Alan Fooks (Scott Arnold 86), Chris Morgan (Andy Coles 70). |
