Scott Smith - Unable to break the deadlock for Borough |
Poole Borough (0) 0, Gillingham Town Reserves (0) 1. Dorset County League Division 1 27th January 2001 Borough Man of The Match : Tony White Borough found themselves facing Gillingham's full Dorset Combination side and despite dominating the match were defeated, ending their 24 match unbeaten run stretching back to last February. Borough created an array of chances in the first period, Scott Smith had a shot parried by visiting keeper, Alan Clements after 13 minutes and 7 minutes later was put through by Pete Morrell but shot straight at Clements. Smith was sent clear again on 30 minutes but lost his footing as he looked to shoot. It took 32 minutes for Gillingham to create their first chance, a header past Andy Gunn's post, but it was a short interlude before Borough were again on top, and Smith knocked the ball back to Alan Fooks in the area but his low shot was saved. HT 0-0 Borough opened the second period with half chances falling to Dave Holdroyd and Smith, but Andy Gunn was also in action and punched a rasping shot onto his bar. The home side should have should have taken the lead on 60 minutes when Smith again timed a perfect run to pick up a through ball and went past the keeper but hit a rising shot which came back off the bar. As the game opened up, Dan Cockwell and Pete Morrell had to make last ditch tackles to deny a Gillingham attack, while at the other end Borough's appeal for a penalty after Smith was tripped as he tracked across the area were turned away by referee Joyce. Disaster struck for Borough on 73 minutes as Toby Giles broke through for Gillingham and made no mistake with his shot. Borough battled to salvage a point and with 10 minutes remaining the referee again waved away penalty appeals to the amazement of everyone in the ground as keeper Clements up ended Smith as he ran out to intercept a a forward pass. Alan Fooks did get the ball in the net a minute later, but was adjudged to be offside,. In the remaining minutes Sean Hebdon came off the bench and hit the bar with a header, Gary Fooks had a shot well saved and Dave Holdroyd saw his attempt somehow hacked off the line and Borough were unable to find a way back. With second placed Holt not playing, Borough remain four points clear but have played one more game than their title chasing rivals.
